I wouldn't call Grant's Animal Man a deconstruction of the superhero comic so much as a deconstruction of the relationship between character and reader. To say that he didn't develop the Bakers as characters is not at all fair, though I do think the writers who came after him (Veitch and Delano especially) certainly filled out what Morrison hadn't, and Milligan explored them by showing us very different parallel universe versions (which is impressively explained, considering this was Post-Crisis).
