The Stuff of Legend: GET THIS BOOK!!!!
Greetings True Believers! I bring you scans from one of the most wonderful things I've read in a long time. The Stuff of Legend by Mike Raicht and Brian Smith. With art by Charles Paul Wilson III. It is simply beautiful. In 1944 a young boy is kidnapped by the Boogeyman out his his bedroom and the only ones who can rescue him are his faithful toys. In book I, they venture into the Dark to save The Boy.

The Boy is taken.

The puppy, Scout tried to save him and is thrown off. The toys come out of the toy-chest to find out what happened.

"The laws." I like that. Ok, truth time. How many imagined your toys coming to life when you slept or weren't looking? I did.

Max, the Teddybear is ashamed that he couldn't save the boy and they start pointing fingers at the dog. But the toy soldier (The Colonel) stops them. And then he makes a promise.

The Colonel then says, "I'm going into the Dark."

Percy the piggybank says, "What else would you expect from the Boy's greatest hero? The Boy will be saved! Three cheers for the Colonel, the bravest of us all!"

The Colonel then asks for volunteers to help him. The Indian Princess is the first to step forward. Followed the Jack-in-the-box. The Max the bear and the Duck volunteer. The toys either belong to the younger brother or are too scared.

The Colonel wants Percy the piggybank to come but he's hesitant. Harmony the Ballerina volunteers and says she will watch over the pig. She says it best:

"I am coming. You are the ones who need me now. The Boy has provided us with love and shelter all these years, it is time to repay that debt. We must go."

The Colonel: "Thank you."

Ballerina: "You are the brave part of The Boy's soul. I will stand beside you."

The toys (and Scout the puppy) assemble and prepare to enter the closet.

This book is pure gold. The art and words are made of win. It made me tear up in a few places. Buy the book and watch the toys battle the Boogeyman and his legions of The Boy's forgotten, broken and bitter toys. There is love, hope, betrayal and sacrifice. Get it.

Referring to the toys as parts of The Boy's soul is so right.

It reminds me in a way of the ... dang it, now I can't remember that wonderful story about the wind-up fairy and her life.... but it has that same sense of capturing a mood, a vulnerability and grace with art that really workds for it.

Help, what is the name of the wind-up fairy?

This does look really cool. (And I have a soft spot for stories about toys that come to life, to be honest.) I'll have to look out fot it!

Interesting story. Always like stories about the innocence of youth and their toys. Does anyone have scans of "Lions, Tigers, and Bears?" that seems like an interesting series.

I need this. Absolutely NEED it. And without s_d, I probably never would have heard of it!

It kind of reminds me of the Velveteen Rabbit in a way, which is one of my favorite books ever.

I refuse to read this because I had a story idea called "The Stuff Of Legends" and I'm upset someone got to it first.

...excuse me while I go get my old stuffed animals out of the box they're in and hug them.

I love the idea of a child's toys being their (usually) silent protectors.

Toy Story came first, this came out this week. But the general idea of toys coming to life is very, very old.

Ah, newsarama has the whole free comic book day comic of this up. Neat! http://www.newsarama.com/php/multimedia/album.php?aid=27895 I definately want to get the whole thing now....although I already care enough about the characters that I'm a little scared to read what happens to them.

I want to hug Scout...and kick that duck for given him a hard time.

The artwork is beautiful, I must say. You don't see many comics drawn in sepia tones.
