Amethyst: sword-and-sorcery for the modern girl
This is from the limited series Amethyst for [info]greenmask, who says she's never seen it. Dial-up unfriendly.

Amy Winston is a normal girl in the DCU who's coming home to open her birthday present from her parents. Unbeknownst to them, a lizard familiar has switched gifts.

Why does he carry a snake?

After being rescued from fantasy bad guys by fantasy good guys, Amy is told that she was born in this magical dimension called Gemworld. Good news is, she's a magical princess called Lady Amethyst and the cool necklace allows her to use magic! Bad news, her real parents were killed by the Big Bad Guy, Lord Dark Opal, so the Exposition Fairy, "Witchmother Citrine", hid her on Earth. The rapid aging is caused by the time differential between dimensions--everyone else remains the same age as they pass back and forth, but Amy/Amethyst goes back and forth.

They want her to lead the resistance since her parents used to rule Gemworld, but she begs to go home. Amy's half-convinced the first time was all a dream, but wants to go back later. Her dog jumps into her magic portal a second too late and gets stuck between dimensions. Amy gets kidnapped again (happens a lot in the first couple issues when she is still a noob) and the castle defenders are magically rooted. The witchmother hears the ghostly barking from between dimensions..

Gemworld is one of the places where all the fairy types went; so unicorns are more common than dogs. Then the dog rescues her. For serious.

The guy with the blue-lined skin is Lord Dark Opal.

Dum-dum-DUM!

She has good adoptive parents. Isn't that amazing?

The war heats up, killing some of Amy's followers and even spilling over to Earth. Amy says goodbye to her parents so she can save both worlds. She goes through intensive war training.

Sorry, but what's the total page-count of this story? (Or are some of these from different issues?)

By the way, can I add to the creator tags or are we full?

Go for it. IIRC, there's no tag limit that we're aware of yet.

It's a 12 issue limited series, this is from at least... four issues, I think, been a long time since I read it.

Mm, Colon.

I liked this series. Though I suspect I was the only straight teenage boy in my town who'd have admitted it.

I'm reminded of Barbie from "A Game of You."

This predates Sandman by quite a few years.

Yeah I always wondered if Barbie was a sort of shout-out to this.

Yeah, Amethyst! I remember digging this series when it was current. Loved the art too, though now I look at the hot pants and cringe.

Loved the series when it first came out, still looks good now.

As others have noted in the past, it's post-She-Ra, but pre-Sailor Moon and it seems strange that DC never have tries to get a cartoon series out of this, or an action figure/doll line.

Actually it's PRE-She-Ra...She-Ra was a copy. We had the original...but Mattel got their toys out before Kenner, who DC had optioned Amethyst to, was able to put together their prototypes...they basically wasted three years. I know this because I co-created Amethyst way back when. Thanks for the nice comments, everyone! -GC

I stand appropriately corrected Mr Cohn, and thank you for A) taking the time to comment, and B) co-creating such a great series!

THANK YOU!

Ahhh bitchin'. I love this stuff, I really do. She even wears purple boots juuust liiike meee. :D. And this even has uniformly good art and some great art. That Dark Lord Opal corner-piece! That is so good.

Plus: one of the two times I've envied the heroine/hero's steed. The other time was a rocket-robot horse, but that is a pretty unicorn. Winged unicorn.*-*.

Yeahhh I'm gonna be looking out for this.

I saw the second post before this one, but still had to comment. Looking back at these, and how much I loved them, it's easy to tell why I got into manga 20 years later.

The 12 issue maxi was the best. I was disappointed by the subsequent series.

Said it before, saying it again... the world needs a Princess of the Gemworld cartoon.

DC needs to put out a collection of the first 12 issues, at least.

Thanks for sharing! I was the right age when this was published, but I never heard about till years later, when I was a bit too old for it. Now, of course, I'm old enough to enjoy "kid's stuff" all I want. ^-^

By which I mean to say, thanks to you, I'm getting to enjoy Amethyst at last after all these years. It looks way fun. I just might have to buy the series.

You really should - the first one, at least. I can't rightly remember the second, and never read the third. But the first was awesome.

I like Amethyst a lot. I think she should have an ongoing series.

But only if they keep her the way she is. You know, NOT an EDGY and GRIM and DARK person.

I hate to tell you, that already happened.

This first series ended decently, except for her boyfriend being unwilling to wait for her to grow up. But she was blinded in Crisis on Infinite Earths, I believe, and then had to merge with the Gemworld to keep it together or something. She pretty much lost her earth childhood.

And I think Topaz and Turquoise gave birth to Mordru maybe. Gemworld itself becomes Xerox, the sorcerer's world...basically, the light happiness goes away. Better off not reading past this first series.

I personally would like to see Sorcerer's World explored with an eye toward this past magic society based on gemstones. And if someone made an ongoing, I'd prefer it based on this first series, with Amy going to Gemworld for adventures.

Yes, this kind of story.

It makes me sad when fun stories and characters from back in the day are morphed into something DARK AND EDGY. Can't we have something fun, or at the very least sort of light-hearted, for awhile? I'm so bored of DARK and EDGY stuff. D:

It's the nature of the business. As long as you have mediocre creators assigned to projects they don't understand, they're gonna lash out and kill all our imaginary friends.
