Star Wars Marvel
I recently started another comic website/project. I got my hands on the full run of Marvel's old cracky Star Wars series. I thought it would be a fun blog project to review issue by issue with scans.

In the meantime, I just finished their six issue "A New Hope" adaptation and thought I would post the highlights here.

Those Star Destroyers sure can pick up speed! They always seemed so slow.




I just always loved that exchange and this variation of it is still funny.




INCEST (which is odd because I spent all night watching season 3 of Arrested Development)




Okay, I feel bad for Kenobi...that looked painful! Look at his face!




Marvel sure played this scene differently...




I love how Red...err.....Blue Leader knew Anakin...but George thought leaving this scene in for the DVD would ruin continuity with prequels (I don't see how) so it was cut.




Anyone else remembering the color kids from Rainbow Brite?

As regards the Han baiting Luke over whther he stood a chance with Leia, I'd say Marvel played it right. That was pretty much how the scene played when I first saw the movie back in 1978 (London, Leicester Square Odeon... in late January). It's only in retrospect with the other movies that it has anything like an ironic resonance.

Rememeber that Luke and Leia being siblings was one of Lucas' many, many rewrites of the story later on (Hence the really squicky kiss near the start of Empire), so at the point this was written, they were probably destined to be together or at least Han wasn't going to end up with her.

Bit of trivia: Luke's squadron in the movie was supposed to be Blue Squadron, but since that didn't do too well with the bluescreen(or maybe it was a greenscreen? I can't keep them straight) it got changed last minute to Red. Supplementary material tells us that there was a Blue Squadron at the Battle of Yavin and it got pretty much decimated. I think Keyan Farlander - that was the surviving Y-Wing - was in it.

A recent comic shows that Red Leader did fly with Anakin Skywalker briefly, during one battle of the Clone Wars. It's somewhere on the wiki.

HAH! I remember those, my brother had the whole series in two giant-format books, they were great!

I keep telling people about the slim, humanoid Jabba, but hardly anyone believes me. Nice to see I wasn't imagining the whole thing. If I remember right, someone told me that when they made the comic Lucas hadn't finalized the design for Jabba, so the one that shows up here was just a placeholder of sorts. But that might not be right, it'd be nice if someone could confirm that somehow.

The original Jabba wasn't the giant slug; that was a retcon after ROTJ. When Lucas digitally re-did ANH, he inserted the new design. (I can't remember if they showed the original Jabba, but I do remember them showing how they gave the new Jabba a reaction after Han walks past him--right over where his tail had to be. )

Yeah, the original Jabba shots was a guy in this wierd robe looking getup. can probably find it on YouTube somewhere, or maybe on the DVD in some behind the scenes sections.

interesting.... Its like they had the original script for Jabba bit

the kiss is a bit too special. Even in movie its a whole 5 seconds of nothing special
