Golden Age Wonder Woman
These are from Sensation Comics #17, 1943.



Sometimes, a page is so whacked out that commenting seems irrelevant.


I cannot believe this was made for children. Though I confess, had I been a child then I'd have been counting the days to each issue.


Hell of a role model.


I know I'm always in hot water with Aphrodite when I don't take command of people who need reforming. She's still sore at me for just moving out when my ex-roommates acted jerky instead of putting them in shackles and lecturing them about submitting to loving domination, maybe also putting them on one of those machines from yesterday'stomorrow's post.


I have to admit, the joke is getting a little old. I'm starting to freak out a little bit. Marston was... quite a piece of work.

Sorry, they will never make a normal respected superhero like Bats or Supes out of Wondy.
Not with the baggage she has to carry around from Marston.
It would be easier to make a Disney-movie with Grumps Fritz the Cat.

Really? How odd that she's the most famous superheroine in the world then, and most of the public knows nothing about the bondage. I would have thought that qualified as "normal respected".

If you mean with world the small subculture of fans of US-superherocomics: Then are you right.
If you mean the real world: Then no. Just no.
I mean just ask some random people here in europe if they know Superman or Batman. ´Good chance they say yes.
Ask them about Wonder Woman: Good chance that they never heard about her. And if they heard, they would think, that she is a superhero-parody.

Odd real world you're living in. Regular people I met in Italy knew Wondy. And nearly everyone knows who Wonder Woman is in America.

See, you can tell those aren't comic fans, because the costumes are wrong. (And because Kim Kardashian would never wear anything that was anything remotely like obscure to a publicity event.) Yet they're pretty recognizably Wonder Woman. And people are wearing these in public, no less.

Y'know, I wouldn't be surprised if Marston-era Wondy had a devoted fan-following in Japan - a good deal of his stories reach levels of absurdity that remind me of Anime quite a bit.

I don't really find it disturbing. He never hurt anyone with it, he did believe in women's rights and it's amusing. I think as blatant as it is, it flew over most kids heads. If I was eight and reading this, I would note "people get tied up a lot" and not thought anything of it.

I wouldn't even have noticed that they got tied up that much, myself - I would have just classified it as "deathtrap" stuff like Batman being chased by giant toys or James Bond being lowered into acid.

I might have questioned how "this woman is my responsibility" translated to "so now you take care of her instead," though.

It's not a joke, dammit! It's DEADLY SERIOUS! Marston was the S&M version of an evangelist - if he'd thought he could've gotten away with it, he would've stood on his roof with a megaphone, yelling 'CHAIN EACH OTHER UP! IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO TRUE HAPPINESS!'

Well, seriously, the guy was a man with a mission - in his own way, he preached about his personal philosophies just as much as Steve Ditko did. And really, the guy practiced what he preached - from what I've read, he had a kinky three-way relationship going with his wife and secretary which just about everyone knew about (uh, in terms of the people who knew him, I mean). One may assume that, had he been born in a different era, he would have preached the virtues of bisexuality, too.

The two women stayed together for about 40 years after Marson died, so maybe he knew what he was talking about after all. Besides, the people in Marson's world seem a lot nicer than the ones in Ditko's world.

Oh, absolutely - I'm no fan of bondage, but I'd share the same world with Etta Candy, mental radios and moon nymphs with lasso-arrows any day. Living life in the Ditkoverse would just be depressing, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and the Creeper notwithstanding. Of course, it's a shame that I'd never get to meet the Question... Hey, maybe the two worlds could do a crossover!

I'm going to have to side with Mavis in this one. Paula's keeping a population of slaves, and not the loving-submission voluntary type, and WW had no problem with it, and in fact sponsors her to become an Amazon? Um,yeah. I'd be wanting to kick her ass too.
