It wouldn't have mattered, as one of his future selves WAS killed in combat some time later, and since he could only pull them from a couple of weeks into the future, he knew he was going to die shortly.

Legion of the Special Executive had a similar fate fighting the Fury in Captain Britain. He had one of my favourite lines for anyone with his self replication power

"Legion! Lose yourself in the crowd!"

"But I AM the crowd!"
