There was an interview on Newsarama where it was revealed that Shane Davis put the cat in the background as a joke, but it became an actual Red Lantern when everybody who saw it said "That's awesome!"

And he was BOGGLED by it, but remained sane enough to insist on the name.

That's the best part to me...his creator is the only person in the company (or, you know, the world), who didn't realize he was awesome. >_>
