I think there's a real Through The Looking Glass difference between superhero comic books versus most other media, in that most other media are arguably TOO cautious and TOO conciliatory toward their audiences, whereas superhero comic books almost seem to operate off a system of deliberate and overt contempt toward their own audience (well, okay, the music industry is like this, too, but only in terms of DISTRIBUTION, whereas superhero comic books are like this in terms of CONTENT). When readers protest changes made to books and characters they enjoy, they're LITERALLY INSULTED by the same people who are trying to get them to BUY those products. Every time I read an interview with Quesada or DiDio, I come away with the genuine belief that they would both be willing to bankrupt their own companies, just to SPITE their audiences.
