Neat I know nothing whatsoever about Air-Walker except that he was Firelord's lov- err, friend.

But I like all the Heralds. They're a cool bunch of characters.

And he was a Nova-Prime. As was his BFF.

There were two actually. The original Gabriell Airwalker was killed in action. Galactus oved him so much he built "The Airwalker automation" to replace him.

Good for Dr. Manhattan, good for every cosmic dude. The Herald of Galactus has no need for your... tighty-whities.

I'm just amused that they are surprised that he speaks English.

Then you must find the Silver Surfer hilarious.

Uh... 'scuse me, I misread. I read your comment as you finding it amusing that he SPOKE English, as opposed to people being surprised that he spoke it. My bad.

Aaaaand now he's dead.

But he inspired SS to stop wangsting for a bit and re-commit to serving Galactus.

It was around the time Nova betrayed Galactus. Since big G got really fed up with having a number of heralds turning on him due to their conscience he specifically chose a psycopath named Morg for his next herald. After witnessing some of Morg's heinous acts Surfer teamed up with Firelord and Nova to confront him and to force Galactus to choose a different herald.

In order to find Galactus, the three heralds dug up Gabriel, repaired him and revived him by charging up his "cosmic cells".

Then there was an awesome confrontation with Morg and Galactus with Terrax thrown in there as well, which resulted in Nova's death. But after that Airwalker pretty much hung around in space until Annihilation.

Not as far as I know. A quick glance at the wikipedia indicates he's still dead.

I felt a little cheated after this build-up when next issue revealed "Gabriel" was just a herald of Galactus. This story gave no hint that was anything but the angel Gabriel in person (so to speak) blowing the horn that means Doomsday. (Armageddon out of here!)

I expected next issue to feature Dr Strange sending the FF to retrieve some mystic scroll or something that would convince Gabriel that he was too early. Then the final page would be an ominous warning that there may not be much time until he comes back.

This was a bait and switch.

That's exactly what I loved about it, because that's precisely what Gabriel's purpose is. It's just for a different cosmic entity than one might initially assume.

Hmm, I would tend to think the writer was just saving the Galactus connection for later in the story. I don't have the next issue so I really have no idea.

Right, exactly. Enter Gabriel, blowing his horn and heralding the end of the world. Next issue it's revealed he represents a slightly different higher power than you might have thought from the name and the horn and the hey. I thought that was awesome.

Did you feel the same way when the FF met Prester John ?

To say nothing of Warren Worthington.

No, that was a different approach. As soon as he first appeared and introduced himself to the Torch and Wyatt Wingfoot, Prester John explained his backstory. There was no misleading of the reader.

Norvell Page wrote a pair of sword-and-sorcery novels, FLAME WINDS and SONS OF THE BEAR GOD, for UNKNOWN. His take was that the character was a gladiator and warrior at the beginning of his career. The name Prester came from the word for "hurricane" rather than "priest." They were interesting adventure stories but not his best work, that would be the Spider stories.

I think an epic summer action movie could be made of the Prester John legend. with a wandering Crusader finding the fabulous kingdom and dealing with court intrigue, battles, mythical creatures etc.
