Wordless image from the DCU blog
The bad girls of Gotham strike a pose.

Love the art.

I know there is a stripper pole hidden somewhere in this image. I just can't see it.

Still hate heels on Harley, but gorgeous cover. Saw it the other day and was wondering when it'd get posted!

The Guillem March! He must be stopped! The heels on the Harley! The sub black-velvet 70's vibe! The horrifically draped thing that I can't tell if it's supposed to be some special gold foil twist edition of Selina's whip, a curtain pull, or the end of Rapunzel's braid! The stiffness! THE EVERYTHING!

aaaaaaaarrrrrrgh!

... But it's way better than the first two covers.

I was pondering whether it was a tassely version of Diana's lasso of truth, myself.

Urgh. Lovely colours, rather undignified cover...aren't we supposed to want to identify with the characters and want to know about them, rather than just slobbering over their bodies?

Grrr, the sad thing is that Gilliam March is a great artist when he isn't doing overly indulgent cheesecake. I hope the art isn't so much like this in the actual book, since I love Paul Dini's writing and have all the trades of his run on Batman so far. Heck, he made Hush cool! I never thought that was possible!

So yeah, still really looking forward to it though.

i dont mind the cheesecake. Guillem draws women very beautifully and fashionably.

I'm more concerned about the downplaying of catwoman in all these covers. his favorite is obviously ivy. she gets a head and a body. at least harley gets a leg in. poor selina is reduced to a whip?!! and in the earlier one she's skulking behind the other two?

this doesn't bode well for her imo. i wonder if dc is downplaying catwoman since didio thinks she's not popular. grrr

It looks like James Bond girls, the way they would look if the comic was made in the late 60's / early 70's.

When I said fashionable, i was actually thinking of the scans of other issues with Vicky Vale (in a work appropriate yet modern suit) and Talia (in a halter top with shirred details). Also loved the way he drew Catwoman's goggles in one of the other covers (where she was skulking on the floor). Lord knows I hate those ugly goggles with a passion, but the way Guillem drew them -- large and looking like Jackie O/Audrey Hepburn sunglasses, very nice and classy.

In this particular frame, Ivy looks naked and all we see of Harley is her leg on heels (which i'm neutral about). Not much fashion here.

I hope this isn't the whole thing and that he still has more to do on it. As is, do not want. The only plus on a cover should not be that it's better than the ones before it in the series.

I don't have a problem with them being sexy, it's the impracticality of things like Harley Quinn in heels, or wondering why--as someone suggested above--Catwoman apparently traded her whip for a golden curtain pull, that bother me.

This one isn't too bad, but a lot of (bad) cheesecake has a way of dehumanizing the women it depicts, I find.

Dehumanizing, like the way Ed Benes used to draw Dinah's abdomen so long and skinny that she no longer looked human? One of the worst things about cheesecake in comics in particular is how poorly most of the artist's grasp anatomy. It not only demeans and objectifies the characters depicted, but doesn't even achieve the sexy-points it was aiming for.

Even though these covers haven't hurt my brain yet (they're gratuitous, but at least they're stylish and competent), the potential cheesecake factor has definitely put me off of GCS. I'll just get my Dini fix from Streets Of Gotham.

Yes, that's exactly it. The other side of it, is that it puts the women up on this strange pedestal where they are not people in any sense of the word, they are just this thing that is only to be looked at, fetishized and wanked over. (Heh, I think there's a slogan to be found in there somewhere: wank over people, not a lack of internal organs and musculoskeletal structure!)

Same here. With Dini writing it one would assume it'll have more substance than Marvel Divas, but these covers deliver the same kind of message that the blurb about Divas did when saying that it was just going to be some "hot fun".

Fetishized is exactly it. Because they no longer resemble anything in the real world, they're some fantasy completely removed from it. This kinda makes me feel less guilty for my fondness of the way Jaime Hernandez and Sam Kieth draw women, because, though stylized as any drawing will be, I can relate them to body-types of women I see every day.

Heels = major suckage and annoying that it's added.
Art = gorgeous, not sure if it's watercolour? but he's a good artist.
HOWEVER....
Harley's costume is black and red. BLACK AND RED. Alternating colours! If leg is red, shoe is black! Not all reddish hue! (Yeah, yeah, yeah he was going for a vibe, yadda yadda...) Hmph!

Good: Ivy's pretty, pretty, pretty hair. That's some really, really fascinatingly pretty hair.
Less good: Harley's heel, and colors, and the strangely golden whip.

I like the cheesecake. I adore the heels. I love the sixties, vintage vibe and the gratuitous cover. I mean, if these were a bunch of hunky men, I'm sure the straight women and gay boys would be drooling out the corners of their mouths.

I mean, there's objectifying women and there's just making them plain hot. I've seen worse. ;)
