Dark X-Men #1

This is from Dark X-Men  #1, by Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk. The cover is by Simone Bianchi.

Continuing from where the preview left off...

Later, the group talks to one of the civilians who was saying "I'm an X-Man." Dark Beast sprays him with something to make him more truthful, and then the civilian (who was a normal human) starts to manifest mutant powers. Michael Pointer goes crazy because the power is so huge, and Mimic experiences his future where he's happily married to Vera Cantor with a child, until he manifests Cyclops's power and accidentally kills them.

Is it as early for you as it is for me? Do your roomates like it freezeing too?

Anyway thanks for the post. It's good to know.

Am I the only one who really is getting a tad annoyed with these little pop-up ID bubbles in comics?

I don't. It helps newer fans like me trying to get into the X-Men comics. Though, I have consciously tried to avoid anything X-related, I'm still curious about a lot of X-Men related things.

I love them, they're often wonderfully snarky.

"Scott Summers: Optic Blasts, Leader of the X-men. Owns a jetpack."

I was annoyed with these because they weren't as snarky and funny to me as the ones in other X-titles are. C'mon, even with the mutant population reduced, there's still a LOT of X-related characters, this is useful.

As a fairly new to X-men comics reader, I like them as I usually don't know who is who (especially given Random Art), plus I can almost always get the snarky comment on the third line.

Although, along that line, "Sun King"? Totally lost.

It's a reference to the Beatles song.

When Norman and the Dark X-Men are introduced (which you can see in the preview) each one gets a Beatles song in their caption.

Mystique is going to sleep with Nate isn't she?

While that would be amusing, being that Nate is an Omega level telepath, that doesn't seem likely. Besides, that might make Madelyne mad!

Why Nate would be rolling out against the Dark X-Men now makes some sense, considering Nate and Dark Beast's history.

Ah, so he won't be joining them then? I would hope an Omega level telepath would be able to figure out this was not his mommy.

He's not clearly "against" them now, he's just coming back from the worldsoul or collective unconscious or whatever that he dispersed himself into back in the day.

My guess is all the recent big Mutant events woke him up.

So...what are the odd's Mystique will try to convince Nate to join their group acting like Madelyne only to be blasted a panel later?

Here's a question- why did Nate assume Mystique was Jean? He's encountered an Evil Alternate Jean Pretending to Be Maddie, so at this point you'd expect him to be like "Are you Jean or Maddie? Which dimension are you from? Are you evil or good?"

Or, he could have, y'know, read their minds.

I'm a little disappointed that the mutant shaman's triumphant return is so... wimpy.

I believe he is not all together just yet.. give it time remember his energy was disperse over the whole earth.. It was almost as he was a little kid when talking to Dark Beast and Mystique. Early prediction is that he helps them escape Osborn and they help him fight with the Dark Avengers by the end of this series.

That's not Norman. That looks a LOT like Harry. He's too skinny, and that suit! That turtleneck, fer cris'sakes!

(Nothing against the artist himself, but MAN he totally screwed up on that one ;P )

Also I really really really really really really really really really really like Mystique's current design. It's much better than the **comment removed to preserve your sanity** she's had forever.

Wow, I have got to get this. I really like that Mystique is treated with respect, both by the writer and Osborn.
Not entirely sold on the look of Mccoy though...

Heh I kind of imagine Mystique going:
Mystique: "Eh yes son, it's me. You have terribly powerful telekinetic powers too right?"
Nate: "Yes."
Mystique: "Well, someone molecularely bonded a bomb to me. Those goshdarn villains! I was just trying to be a hero, helping innocent children! And puppies and crap! Wanna help me get it out?"
Nate: "You.. you're not my mother. Or Jean. Or Maddie. Or Queen Jean."
Mystique: "Ah... so you figured that out, did you? Then please leave my molecules where they are."
Mccoy: "Mine too! ....Pretty please."

Yay, Nate! He should totally join the Fantastic Four, and not just because he had the gayest shower scene ever with Ben and Johnny. (But a little bit because of that.)

So Norman Osborn, who has stared down Cyclops, breaks bread with the likes of Doom and Loki, constantly spars with Spider-Man, and has survived death, is afraid of Mystique?

Well, out of those, Scott's not much of a killer, he knows he's safe from Peter and as for Doom and Loki, he probably believes (probably mistakenly) that gods and statesmen might be villainous but they're not about to kill him like petty thugs while he has something to offer them.

However, Mystique's the kind of person who'd kill you in your sleep, smile while doing it and then take your form and live your life in your place. She's someone to be nervous of. Especially when she has a large bomb inside her. She's not as... predictable as some.

Mind you, he hasn't demonstrated a similar nervousness around Bullseye or Sentry, who are even more unpredictable, but then they're not stroking his arm, presumably.

Sentry's not sneaky, and his leash works better on Bullseye. Mentally, I agree she's the larger threat.

The wild part of this is Quesada had X-MAN canceled by issue #75 because Nate's background was so confusing (a creation from Scott Summers' and Jean Grey's DNA from an alternate universe that didn't exist anymore).

I wonder how Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk talked Quesada back into letting Nate Gray back into the fold.

Plus, I can't wait for the inevitable Sentry/Nate fight.
