X23 a la Miller

This is what Lauren got up to after Captain America allowed her to go free instead of becoming an assassin for SHIELD by way of atoning for her various murders,

Oh well, they had to make her different from Cass in some way I guess.

That is...special. No love for the character from my side, but she still deserves better than the social-comment/sad-story-pandering with which some writers seem to reach for the "critically acclaimed" status.

And this was written by Joe Quesada!

Though didn't someone try to retcon this by saying X-23 never had sex with her clients, she only cut them up?

Heh, reminds me of the complaints people have about the Miller/Brubaker origin of Catwoman.

So rather than a troubled young woman who ended up drifting into prostitution due to the horrible social services in pre-Batman Gotham, only to pick herself up after the world tried to grind her beneath it's boot and metaphorically conquer the world, she became a cat burgular that pretended to be a non-contact dominatrix while she was hiding from the Mob.

One's tragic but gives Selina a reason for wanting to make the neighbour a better place when she got over her "my childhood and teen years were horrible, the world owes me!" phase (covering Miller through to Balent) and into her "how can I use my wealth and skills to make sure no one else goes through what I did?" phase (Brubaker to the end of her last series).

The other... implies she was always selfish with no motivation for why she decides to start helping those who can't help themselves.

Perhaps not as degrading.

This is pretty much why I've tried to ignore NYX. Pretty art, sucky story.

Wasn't that Kyle and Yost having a huff re: their discomfort about a character they'd based on a neighbor's daughter being shown as a prostitute?

If so, it's fucking hilarious considering all the gruesome acts they've had X-23 commit/had committed on X-23.

I thought this take on the character was in pretty bad taste all around since this was her much-hyped first appearance in comics after being introduced in a children's cartoon show. And then...sigh...there's Stabbity Force.

Was this her first comic appearance? I thought she turned up in Claremont's last Uncanny run before that, where she kind of bonded with Rachel and Psylocke.

Yes, NYX's "self-mutilating teenage prostitute" take was her first appearance. The Claremont issues came later.

Miller?

No, this was Joe Quesada.

And it's important to note that this was the first time X-23 appeared in comics, long before Yost wrote her backstory.

Yeah, I'll gladly take the side that says that she just cut them up instead of actually having sex with them. Mostly because in the most recent issue of X-Force, Domino mentions that X-23 is SIXTEEN years old, which would make this whole thing a lot skeezier than it already is.

Since NYX was a story about mutant teenagers going the wrong way (runaway, drugs, criminality), I don't see what's so upseting or surprising about one of them being a prostitute.

Yeah, being uncomfortable with even the fictional depiction of teen prostitution-- people are so sensitive, amirite?

Yes, people are sensitive, especially when it's about sex. The same teen has been raised and tortured to be a killing machine, but it looks like it is less a problem than the fact she has been a prostitute.
In a comic about teen having serious troubles, you can't expect them to be depicted like characters from "Saved by the bell".

Perhaps because the trafficking and sexual slavery of young girls is much more common and widespread in the world than the indoctrination of child soldiers.

And unlike warfare, prostitution has no myth of honor or glory. Soldiers, even the child soldiers kidnapped from their families and brainwashed, are still told that what they are doing means something, that it's for some greater good. While often that is just plain false, and soldiers often see through it eventually, at least for a time they can see themselves as heroes in the making.

A prostitute, on the other hand, is given a much different story, one much closer to reality. She is an object, to be used and abused by men for their own pleasure. A prostitute can have no illusions of glory-- they don't give medals to whores.

To put some numbers here, HRW estimates somewhere between 200k-300k child soldiers in use world wide. In the US alone, 50-100k women and girls are, um, imported each and every year.

So, there's scale. There's also...child soldiers aren't really a *western* problem, whereas child prostitution and sex slavery very much are.

Hindsight is 20/20. You make it sound like the Captain America/SHIELD storyline was published first then this was, which is not the case. NYX was godawful, but it misrepresents the characters history somewhat to act like this was a direct followup to a story that attempted to give her a more dignified course as a character.

Meh, I've never given a damn about her, I did like the first episode she appeared in in X-Men:Evultion bu it would have been just as enjoyable with anyone else substituted for her.

I do enjoy the fact that since she's just a clone of Logan they've pretty much, entirely unintentionally, shown that both characters are bisexual. How else could two characters with the same DNA (though I believe X-23 is issing the Y chromosome only) both have interest in the opposite gender? Either 23 should have been a lesbian or they're both bi, not that the writers thought of that.

Hm, since I think that she isn't a striaght up clone, rather a clone with some of the DNA of one of the female scientists who created her thrown into the mix, I'd say she was more she daughter then a duplicate with boobs.

So her orientation wouldn't be effected either way.

Arguably the female clone of Peter Parker in the Ultimate Universe would have a better case for being a lesbian, as she has the memories of Peter in her head, so possibly could be attracted to girls still.

Not that lesbians are women with male minds, that's moronic, but you get what I mean in this case, I hope.
