For all the jokes about Claremont, this period on X-Men was when he was on the absolute top of his game: he knew the characters inside out, he knew the Marvel Universe but had a bigger vision of it (Madripoor, Australia, Russian Commandos) that extended beyond New York and had hit a great level of tone that was fairly ambitious for a superhero comic.
