Von Hammer and his squad come across a burning town, destroyed by the Brits.

The English ambush them through the smokescreen of the burning town.

Hans von Hammer sharing his grim determination with a puppy = The best fucking thing you will ever see. Just tear your eyeballs out right now, you won't top this.

Von Hammer manages to destroy the war wagon, stranding the British fighters. They're forced to land and surrender.

Schizo much? "The war will kill us all. COME ON, PUPPY, WE'RE GOING ON AN ADVENTURE!!"

Von Hammer is ordered out on another mission.

Okay, Garth Ennis, Mark Millar, Warren Ellis, you can stop trying to be edgy and shocking now. Robert Kanigher killed a puppy in the 1970s, in a comic book for kids. Top that shit.

Unsurprisingly, von Hammer doesn't take it well.

	D'aww...oh. :) It's hilarious seeing a puppy meet a strange big mean wolfdog. The puppy is all "OH! HE'S SO BIG I MUST SMELL HIM" floppy floppy toddle toddle Then the big dog is all "Mm? Something approaches. I must smell it for threats!" loom glower hound of hell At that point the puppy realizes the big dog could EAT him, and scampers. (Reply to this)

He takes a puppy with him in a small, open cockpit into a firefight and he doesn't think anything bad will happen? He's lucky the dog didn't jump out of the plane trying to get away from the loud noises the first time they went up.

I'm not sure I understand the train of thought behind "the people I fight with and now my dog have died pointless deaths; this killing is tragic, so in response I'm going to kill as many people as I can."

Then again, maybe that's the whole point. He's been so degraded by war that even when he tries to be human, he can't quite do it.

Is this story posted anywhere else on the 'net that you know of? Because I want to read it, 'cause it's kind of famous as Enemy Ace stories go, but my computer is playing its usual jolly games, and stretching two-thirds of the panels into unreadable taffy-shapes. Is there a comics blog or something that has it posted?
That being said, what I CAN see looks pretty heartbreaking. As a dog person myself, that 'puppy falling out of the cockpit' moment would be about the most horrifying moment of my life. And judging by Von Hammer's expression, he IS a dog person, so he feels the same way. Poor puppy...
