It's that time of the month again! 'Tec #857!
Before I get too caught up with with tag-wrangling, let's see what Renee's up to this month.

We last left our hero finding her best lead full of, well, lead. Lucky for her that isn't the end of the trail.

You know, if this were any other mask, they'd just chase down the gunman, and it only just occurs to me that she doesn't and how it isn't out of place for her not to. This is The Question, after all, a detective first and a crimefighter second. To have this happen helps the plot thicken, the investigation to become deeper. Also, it seems like a familiar film noir trope: killer comes in, kills contact while the detective is in earshot, leaves before anything can be done about it. I can think of at least The Big Sleep featuring a scene like that off the top of my head, but I'm sure there're more.

Either way, it's an excuse for more Tot, which is always welcome.

She's still new to this setup, Tot. I'm sure Vic had countless opportunities to rummage through your bookshelf for the explicit purpose of identifying any quote you might pull out, but Renee hasn't known you as long. I'm also a little amused that Renee's guess is a little more obscure than Tot's answer, so maybe he was going easy on her to start out with.
He pulls a home address out in Hollywood Hills. A detective story set in L.A.? Who'da thought? :D

"A very cheap one."
I've been really curious about what kind of time has passed between FC: Revelations and 'Tec #854, and this exchange is exactly why. I finally read Five Books of Blood a bit ago (yeah, i know, what kept me?), and the relationship between Tot and Renee there was rather cold. It could be that once all the excitement from 52 finally winded down, he finally had time to settle down and mourn Vic's death, and how he might've felt about Renee running around in his mask, but the huge difference between their interaction in Five Books of Blood and the 'Tec backup means they would've needed time to grow on each other, and it would've had to happen after Revelations. It' odd on the one hand, but nice on the other, to see Tot doing what he's always done best (running op, being sardonic, and quoting philosophy), and technology letting him do it better, even.

Moving on, Renee sneaks in the house (very cool page, she's hopping up walls!) and finds the shipping manifest she's after. But then the lights flick on.

Srs, how easy do you think it is to intimidate The Question? Her Will Save probably rivals Batman's!

You know, that just keeps happening. It goes along with what Tot was saying in the third scan, but these guys aren't making it easy to be investigated! Renee won't make it easy for them to avoid it either, though. She slips the manifest into her jacket and makes a break for it, kicking some dudes in the face on her way as she runs on into next month.

I've heard they're going to start allocating more of the pages toward Renee's side now the first Batwoman arc's over, but it might've been when the second one's through, though I've also heard tell she's getting the main 'Tec feature after the third one. We'll have to see how it all turns out.

Speaking of Kate, interesting developments as the Elegy arc ends.

Devils always in the details. The same way Rucka likes to play around with whether a word balloon is in English or not, notice how Alice's is a regular black-text-on-white instead of the normal inverse thing she's had going?
The next Batwoman arc is "Go!" which is the long-awaited origin story. We've seen a fair bit of foreshadowing throughout "Elegy", but this is a plot point that has me really excited to see how Rucka handles it.

Keep your eyes out for the next issue!

Stupid irrelevant issues that distract me from the story: Where did she get a modern-looking laptop with a mid-80s-esque green-screen monitor on it?

It's probably nothing more than a green film of protective plastic to stop the screen getting damaged.

Maybe she fiddled with the color setting because she likes the old school look?

See how I'm not shooting off a comment about the tracksuit look?

That's because I saw the scans someone posted of The Question from the 80s.

that would've also been me! Granted, I'm responsible for about 90% of the posts around here involving either Question, so that's usually a safe bet. Need to get back on the horse as goes the Vic series, though, it's been a few weeks.

I'm definitely interested in where 'your father's eyes' leads.

Mostly, I'm hoping it means this isn't the end of Alice.

I actually disliked that aspect of the story. I want a 'Batwoman' to have an equivalent mission to Batman, not to be chasing looney relatives. It's like finding out that the Joker is really Thomas Wayne's other son, that was hidden away from him...etc.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, now. It would only be like that if we found that out about the Joker during the first story he was ever featured in.

Even then, Batman would have been well established. Batwoman is not.

To readers, no, but 52 was at least two in-universe years ago, and she's been active in Gotham all that time.

"I want a 'Batwoman' to have an equivalent mission to Batman, not to be chasing looney relatives"

When was it established that Batwoman just wanted chase looney relatives? Her mission for all intents and purposes IS equivalent to Batman. Stop the bad guys, save as many as possible and be special! All we get is that one line "You have our father's eyes", that's it.

"What was I thinking?"

You weren't. We still don't know what the end result of this story will take us so I wouldn't jump on judgement that Batwoman's story will lead into dull mediocrity just because Alice may turn out to be her sister/half-sister.

I wasn't 'jumping' on anything. My basis for disliking the arc IS that Alice will turn out to be Batwoman's looney relative, not whether a decent story can be made of that situation. Sibling battles are the basis for great storytelling going back to Cain and Abel after all.

"Sibling battles are the basis for great storytelling going back to Cain and Abel after all."

So what's the problem? Saying that sibling battles can lead to great storytelling, but disliking it off the bat because it is now a sibling battle doesn't really make much sense.

This story isn't really been about a sibling battle anyways.

The best thing about Batwoman is that absolutely nothing, save living in Gotham and having a bat-motif is even vaguely like Batman.

Anything that continues that is a good thing.

I'm starting to wonder if there's a closer connection between Alice "Beth" (from an unscanned page) and Bette "Flamebird" Kane, as well. She did show up in Gotham at roughly the same time....

(No, I don't think she IS Bette. But she might be her Mom...)

It's hard to say, but if Bette is just starting college, Alice could be in her late 30's and still pull off the look.

I was waiting for someone to post from this. I tried yesterday and had scanner issues. :(

Hey guess what? I am not going to complain about Renee's belly shirt. That's because I am going to complain about her hair barrettes. She needs to lose those. One, they look awful and two, they could be used as a weapon against her.

You make a good point about her relationship with Tot. It's nice to see their interactions have a flavor of Tot and Vic's.

Am I the only one feeling a bit of a let down from the end of Elegy? We get a big reveal on who Alice is but not much else. Don't get me wrong, I've really enjoyed it and feel we got a good sense Kate but in retrospect some of this arc seems like pretty (very pretty) filler. I am really looking forward to the next arc and finding out about Kate's origin.

I'd been sitting on the scans since Thursday, but got lazy. :(

And actually! I don't think that's a belly shirt this time. It looks more like a sports bra. As for the barrettes, they're hidden under the cap? Though it would take a lot of work to use barrettes against a person, I would think.

And really, I thought both were moving a little slow to start off with. Renee's because of the low page count, and Kate's because they have a status quo to set. They're picking up now, and I'm looking forward to what we have in sight. Wouldn't be the first time Rucka was accused off being too slow-burn, after all.

Damn, Renee looks hot in that sports bra.

I'm really digging the Question feature. The writing's great and the art is beautiful. I actually like it better than the art on the Batwoman story (not that the art isn't great, but it kinda creeps me out how pale Kate is. She's like a zombie...).

I love the panel layouts on that last page. It always makes me happy to see unusual page setups :)

Maybe I just know a lot of people who seem to be into that scene, but the ultrapale + bright hair has a lot of followers, and I don't really see it as that unusual. It seems strange to me that so many people are finding it bizarre, when a lot of people I know are kvetching that they can't find makeup pale enough for their look!

The 'our father's eyes' bit makes that seem unlikely. Setting up something like that as the character is dying is too much of a waste for me to think a good writer like Rucka would do it.
