Caffeinated Flashes
Working tonight was going to be a bitch if she didn't wake herself up. Josephine hadn't been sleeping well and managed to schedule herself shift after shift to compensate for it, in an effort to keep herself occupied more than anything. While she had never been a Starbucks girl, she figured it would be the most accurate place to get something caffeinated and "keep Josephine awakey" enough. It was Starbucks after all. They were everywhere and when you turned the next corner, they were there, too. After giving her order, Josephine settled on a nearby couch and found gaze drawn to the fireplace over and over again. She didn't know why. If asked, she definitely couldn't have explained. But her attention was drawn away from the fireplace when her order was called a moment later. After retrieving her order, Josephine took the same seat she'd previously occupied and took a sip of the caffeinated beverage. It felt damn good burning it's way down her throat and warming her from the inside. Not the same as whiskey, but still pretty good. And still... still her attention was diverted from the coffee in her hands to the fire crackling at her right She wasn't sure why, but she'd been feeling odd. Even before Nate had asked her if they were really siblings. She hadn't told him, but she'd asked herself the same question. As she stared, beguiled by the orange and reds of the flames, she could swear she could almost hear voices. "Well, you certainly have gotten bigger since I died. And you grew your hair out. Ever heard of a hair cut?" "Oh, I'm Veronica by the way, Veronica Mars." She could hear the nickname "Jo", but it wasn't meant for her. Not her her... but another her. And it meant something else... The name Joanna Beth came to her in a flash, spoken in a harsh tone, accompanied by the flash of a brunette woman standing behind a bar with a rag over her shoulder and a gun within reach. Who was Joanna Beth... and why did Josephine have the very uncomfortable feeling that she was closer to the other woman than she thought? |
