Ashleigh was gone.
Jack had been around long enough to know what it looked like. He'd seen it with people he knew, with Winnie and Toby and Veronica (even Blake's absence he noticed). He's experienced it second hand through Charming and Aragorn. Always it came with a bittersweetness, with loss and hope (for better things) intermingled. Living with the hotel wasn't an easy thing, regardless of which side of the door someone was on. Now there was only one side, Winnie was back, and Ashleigh had left.
Could he begrudge her desire to leave? No, nor her success at it. Her son deserved a better life than what the hotel could provide, even within these worlds beyond the doors. And she had spoken of how she wished to return to Scotland, away from the demons that churned up here within the hotel, and family strife.
Jack could understand that too. By all accounts he had an easier time than most, but his times had been hard, like a wood chipper going through the soul. With Aragorn, he'd chosen solitude, a home outside of the city with nothing but nature and Spot, but there were few things left here for him. Ashleigh was gone. The inhabitants of the closest village were changing, and maybe it was time to return to a world populated with people again.
But where? And which world? He'd heard about Gotham from Eddie, and he didn't think that was the door for him. But aliens? Harry Potter? Also not for him. A home was more than just the bad things that happened to it though, it was about the people. Snapping a leash onto Spot's collar, Jack headed out the door of his cottage and into the hotel, not for the last time, he loved his place in the middle of nowhere too much, but getting out and seeing people again? He needed to do that.
