log: eddie/damian/leena at the lake
Who: Damian, Eddie, Leena
What: talking by the lake
Where: the lake
When: recently
Warnings: probably discussion of disturbing stuff. will update.
The lake next to Repose was just as unpleasant in the summer as the winter. It made the air balmy; thick with heat and moisture that stuck to your body and dried when you finally got home. It also spawned bugs that buzzed, bit and crawled. Eddie found the crocodile-infested Jersey sewers preferable to being eaten alive out here in nature. He'd rather chow down on a pretzel out of the gutter than jump into that lake. But, complaining about the weather was an old man thing to do and he silently got it out of the system before he even parked his green Chrysler. The heat, the humidity, the bugs? They had to be ignored with the stakes so incredibly high. If Helena ran off for good, if Damian accidentally made things worse? Who knew what was going to happen to the family. The family that needed to be kept together or they'd have another handful of years of unbearable distance. Bruce leaving caused it last time and Eddie was determined not to repeat history. For a man who liked to dwell in the land of nostalgia, he desperately wanted things to finally move forward from that awful Jersey night when everyone was convinced Bruce had died.
All that said, Eddie was cautiously optimistic. He always liked Helena and from what he knew about Leena? He liked her, too. He knew he wasn't a big part of her life anymore, but he wanted to be there for her if the situation called for it. Eddie wasn't needed for his hacking abilities anymore, he barely was needed for supernatural expertise, but he was happy to act as support for anyone in the family. He had spent so much of his life smoothing over bumps in the tapestry that very few things ruffled his feathers anymore. Even Damian who spent a small lifetime trying to perfect how to get under people's skin.
Eddie liked the kid. There wasn't much Damian could do about that.
He leaned against his car and waited. Eddie wasn't in his suit, it was too damn hot for that, so he settled for the baseball cap, the t-shirt and the jeans. It wasn't neon green in the slightest. Eddie glanced over at the lake, out towards the- oh shit. Oh shit.
Even though Eddie wasn't much of a praying man anymore, he offered one up to star-studded night sky: Please keep her away from Edwards Island.
