Alex was exhausted. After the whatever it was had blown through town, the comic shop was left with big, jagged holes in both front windows. He'd had to get both his boss and the owner involved, and never mind the adrenaline rush from the noise and the chaos, he'd spent most of the rest of the day divesting the front of the store of shards of glass, not to mention the individual comics themselves, and then tossing what wasn't salvageable, and then, on top of that, helping board up the front windows. All while a chill wind was blowing in. So, exhausted. Cold, tired, and his hands and forearms a comical (heh) panoply of superhero band-aids from the many little cuts he'd gotten in doing so. It could've been worse, he knew; he was nowhere near the front of the shop when it happened, and nobody else had been, but the fact that it had happened was quite enough, thanks.
So, he'd really done the adult and responsible thing after work, which was picking up a can of off-brand Pringles and a Strawberry Fanta from the General Store for dinner, and trudged his way back to the apartment, listening to some light Christmas music on his headphones to just kind of drown out the general shittiness of the day. It was working a little bit, but as soon as he reached his front door and started fishing out the keys to his apartment did he stop and think about what his own place might look like. Which made him drop the keys at the mere thought of more work, and a cold place, and glass everywhere, and in turn, made him kick the keys down the hallway in frustration. Which he knew was stupid, but goddamnit, enough already.
