Travis Bodeen's bonfire took place on one of the first truly warm days of the year. It was in the 80s during the day, and the evening was proving to be a balmy one, not dipping below 70. It was clear, and there was a slight breeze off the lake, and the titian glow of the bonfire could be seen from all the manor homes surrounding the water. The locked house, large and vast, belonged to Mason Callahan, and the host had kindly provided kegs, filled and at the ready for any partygoers. Red Solo cups were piled high, and coolers of ice held non-alcoholic drinks for those so inclined. There were chairs by the dancing flames, and the dock was lit with lights that twinkled invitingly. A few canoes were pulled up on the sand, and the shore had some blankets stretched out for those wishing to listen to the water lap. There was music being played in a distant corner of the yard, and there couples danced cheek-to-cheek beneath trees that had shed their winter bareness in favor of blooming flowers that made the air smell sweet and bright. It was a busy and loud affair, with a vast number of Repose's residents coming out for the first bonfire of the year. Teens necked in the woods, and older couples sat on the dock and dangled their feet into water that wasn't frigid. Friends danced under trees, and stories were told around the blazing fire. Cars littered the front yard and spilled out onto the road beyond, their presence beckoning forth even those who hadn't heard about the festivities, which promised to go on well into the morning. |
