First of all: I love music, especially when it manages to accentuate a scene in a movie/show.

My most favorite song used in QaF is "Weapon" by the Matthew Good Band. You know, from episode 309, that blow job scene right before the 11 o'clock trick arrives at the loft. Right after Stockwell announces Brian as his gay BFF. When I watched the episode for the first time I fell in love with this song instantly. And when the lyrics started "Here by my side, an angel. Here by my side, the devil." they were just perfect for the situation Brian was in at the time with his involvement in the Stockwell campaign. (And I was wondering who the devil and the angel is when it comes to Brian and Justin ... lol)

Also the "Never turn your back on me. Never turn your back on me again.", well, it could be interpreted as Brian's hidden thoughts on his and Justin's reunification.

Wild speculations put aside: I just love this song so much, I still have the intro as the sound notifying me of newly arrived e-mails. And it hasn't left my playlist for three years. Although, whenever the song starts on my MP3-player I'm a bit puzzled who the heck is sending me an e-mail ... lol

I really can't pick one. There are many that I like, and several that I love equally.

One, as [info]kari77 mentions, is Weapon, by Matthew Good. Episode 309. She mentioned the lyrics that stood out to her. For me, it's different ones, such as "Careful, be careful" and "This is where the world drops off." These say a lot about Brian and Justin's new/old relationship. Careful can mean a lot of things, such as tread carefully, don't make the same mistakes. "This is where the world drops off" is a metaphor for Brian and Justin's way of shutting out evereything around them. When they're alone, they almost exist in a bubble. There's no one but them.

Another song I love is "Break 4 Love", by Pet Shop Boys, used in 209, on of my favorite episodes. It's where we're treated to Justin's Snoopy Dance Of Love. It's fast, sexy and fun.

The thord one that comes to mind is Sola Sistim, by Underworld, used in the closing scenes of 306, when Justin's sitting at the bar in Woody's, after having seen Ethan leave with "the music student". It's slow, seductive, and rather melancholy. Two lines that jump out at me were "My devious nature, make it go away" and "Beautiful, broken, my crystal fingers". They describe perfectly both Ethan's betrayal and Justin's shattered illusions. Interestingly enough, both Ethan and Justin's art are made by their fingers; they each wear a promise ring on their ring fingers. Justin is seen playing with the ring, and Brian taps it to remind Justin of his broken symbol of true love.

Last, we have "Get Some Lovin" by Kristine W, from 310. I just love the energy of this song, the energy of Babylon, crammed to the rafters because of the crackdown of Liberty Ave by Stockwell. You can almost feel the heat, the thumpa-thumpa, smell the sweat. Dancers dressed as cops, dancers wearing handcuffs, and a good time was had by all.

All of these songs enhance the scenes for which they were used, and makes my viewing experience that much more pleasureable.

I love that interpretation of the lyrics. It's so true for Brian and Justin.

Well said. It's awesome to think more carefully about individual songs and what they add to the scenes. I completely agree with this especially - "This is where the world drops off" is a metaphor for Brian and Justin's way of shutting out evereything around them. When they're alone, they almost exist in a bubble. There's no one but them.

Now I'm listening to Sola Sistim and realizing I don't have any icons from that scene! *flails* I want one of Justin when he's looking down... it must exist. Help, anyone??

I've thought about this since I took Xie's poll, and I really have to say "High School Confidential" from 120 KOB. I know it's not angsty(well in a way it is)and doesn't tie to a (totally hot fucking scene (well, yeah what WAS Justin doing to that pole?) but I mostly just love it cause it's peppy and slutty and EVERY time it comes on my IPOD, at the gym, I get the biggest, naughtiest grin on my face. I can see Justin and I KNOW my pace picks up and I'm dancing right along with him! It makes me feel GREAT!

There is a lot of good music in qaf, but after all this time my favorite is still Goia, From the inside, episode ??, I love all the blue lights and the way they are looking at each other, fabulous acting. And I don´t have any pretty icons, what a tragedy.

one of my favorites is "you think your a man" played when justin first gets to the loft and brian is standing there. i do think it would have been better if it would have been played when justin left during the rage party. much more appropiate.

I'd never heard that song before I heard it on QAF. Then I bought it and added it to my QAF playlist and had fun listening to it over and over until I could sing along with every. single. word. It's so fun to belt out in the car (alone) :D

ummm or to belt out in my apartment when my roommate is out and I'm all alone... like right now!!!

*SINGS SINGS SINGS*

It would have been really interesting to hear it in 220 when Justin leaves with Ethan. Wow, yeah *listens to lyrics* Much more appropriate there.

You've got a nerve to walk away, mark the words I'm gonna say, Mister you just made a big mistake

I love "Sketch" by Kurt Swinghammer, heard in 205 when Brian lays on the bed eating an apple and Justin sketches him using his new computer for the first time.

I love it first because I just think it's an incredibly, unbelievably beautiful song. It's so peaceful and it just makes me want to stop and take a deep breath. I love it because of that scene too. It's so wonderful to see Justin taking another step in the right direction. Healing.

Now I do have it on my QAF playlist, but it was one I wanted so much and I couldn't find it anywhere and now I'm sorry to say I don't remember who did somehow have the mp3 and gave it to me (thank you SO MUCH whoever you were!) A few times I've actually put just this one song on repeat and listened to it when I was really stressed out and just needed to center myself.

I LOVE Battleflag by LoFidelity Allstars. It's from the scene in 311 where Brian and Justin take a sledgehammer to the lock on the backroom of Babylon. I love it because a) they're back together and so clearly working as a team and b) because Brian is being a badass. It's actually the first song on my playlist.

Battleflag is such a crazy cool song. It's so appropriate for Brian in that moment - finally fighting back against Stockwell.

gotta launder my karma

And I couldn't agree more with you more...
they're back together and so clearly working as a team ... I love how Brian hands Justin his jacket and then how Justin gets to lead everyone back into the back room.

I love Lover's Spit by Broken Social Scene for the reunification in 308. The combination of this song and the filming/editing is pretty hypnotic. I'm out of the "cool new music" loop and had never even heard of this band, but the day after I saw 308, I heard this song in a pizza parlor! Life is weird sometimes.

* So what is YOUR favorite song?

No more good guys, by Skindive.

* Which episode/scene is it from?

End of 201, when Brian is getting into his jeep after telling Jen that he cares about Justin, and that she asks him not to see him again.

* Why is it your favorite? Because of the song itself (the sound quality, the artist, etc.)? Because of the context (because it's from futon!sex duh)?

It's so sad and so angsty, perfect for the scene. I love it!!

* Do you have that song on your QAF playlist?

I don't own any of those devices where you can have playlists, so that would be a no. But I do have the song on a cd.

That song isn't mentioned too often, but you're right, it is really perfect for that scene.

I died today, but I'm still breathing
bleeding for now
I'm broken

:(

You left me standing here,
alone and colder,
I hope that some day soon,
the pain inside will stop
I hoped you'd see me,
I hoped you'd understand,
Or crucify me for my failings,
my cruel ambition,
hardly justified,
and the pain inside will ... stop

*meep* Oh Brian...

I love the bells in the beginning, it sets the tone really well. (I hope those are bells, otherwise I'd feel really silly.) Reminds me of the stories of the bells being rung when Presiden Kennedy was shot and For Whom the Bell Tolls. I also love the "I died today, but I'm still breathing" line. Brian looks more devastated in this scene than he did earlier in the episode when he was a fall down, drunken mess.

My favorite song would have to be Svefn-g-englar by Sigur Ros from the end of 202. Mainly because I love that scene so much and that song is perfect. I can't think about that moment without hearing it in my head. I don't have any playlists QAF or otherwise so no it is not on my QAF playlist. But if I had one it would be.

There is so much amazing music I have discovered thanks to this show, I don't know that I can narrow it down to one, but I'll pick one of my favorites.

* So what is YOUR favorite song?
Proud, by Heather Small

* Which episode/scene is it from?
101: The "Lois Lane" scene on the rooftop of the hospital with Brian and Michael
Remix in 513: The end, Brian dancing on the platform at Babylon

* Why is it your favorite?
Some for context for that scene with Michael and Brian on the rooftop. For the lyrics. For the music. For the sound. For the fact that it's a full-circle song (Like Dandy Warhol's "Sleep") that is used in 101 and again in 513. I just love it. It's like my life-examining, feel-good song :)
"What have you done today to make you feel proud?"
"Step out of the ordinary"
*laughs at my own geeky lyric obsession*

Also, it was the first song I downloaded when I decided I needed to make a QaF playlist :)

* Do you have that song on your QAF playlist?
YES. Both versions!

*runs off to go listen to my entire QaF playlist and fall in love all over again*

Such a great song and I feel the same way about it - It's like my life-examining, feel-good song :) It's also cool that it's a "full-circle" song like you said.

Which version do you like better? I think my preference changes with my mood :P If I feel like dancing I like the 513 version better.

Hmm, good question.
I agree with you, I think it's a mood thing.
Dancing or working out, or any other time I need to get pumped up, it's definitely the remix. Working out, particuarly if I'm going for a run or bike ride, I get all "YEAH! Steppin' out of the ordinary!" *Cue the techno, pick up the pace*
And then the original version is when I'm in most any other mood. Tired, relaxed,, thoughtful, or just in need of a little pick-me-up.
Like I said, definitely on my happy-songs playlist too :)

I think we had a discussion in this comm a few weeks ago (maybe longer), too, about those full-circle songs like Proud and Sleep and possibly a few others. I think they're neat because they remind us of how far the characters have come and the journey we've taken with them.

I really love all of the songs used for the B/J moments. There are also awesome ones just spread periodically throughout the show, like Mass Romantic by the New Pornographers and Boy by Book of Love.

But for tonight, I am going to answer with I'm the Main Man by Jason Nevins in the fantasy Emmett&Drew-at-Babylon scene in S4. I love the song and turn it on whenever I am blue or need to work up some energy to clean the kitchen. I also love it in the scene. Emmett feeling so proud. It's just awesome. Tomorrow I might have a different answer about my favorite song though. :)

There are many songs in QAF that I like, but my favorite's got to be “When my boy walks down the street.” It's sweet, optimistic and romantic - and naive, I know :), but hearing it always makes me smile like an idiot. :) What a perfect choice for the scene where Justin recovers from the attack! You can just feel Brian's relief, his love and pride that Justin made it. Awww! :p
