S3: Episode 305, Question
You know the famous backroom scene where Brian asks, "Is that your idea of true love, Sunshine?"
I know I essentially understand what's going on here, but it's rather jumbled for me. I don't feel I have the fluid, connected, complete understanding of this that I am hoping some of you may. I believe a lot of it goes over my head. I would love to hear your thoughts, theories, impressions.
Here's some of mine:
The thought that I am leaning most towards, at this point in my viewing, is that Brian didn't have a plan. He just couldn't help himself. He knew how to manipulate Ethan, so he did. Like, he just couldn't stop himself, the way normal people wouldn't be able to stop themselves from drunk dialing the person that they're still in love with, can't stop thinking about, living without. And his cutting remarks were just born out passion...out of his own pain.
At first, I think I was trying to assign some grand motive to his actions, such as Brian was (with pre-calculations) trying to get rid of Ethan, so that he could win Justin back. I thought, Brian was also probably convinced that he was helping Justin, by showing him Ethan's true colors (again in a calculated way).
But I have never been able to reconcile those latter 2 reasons with the rest of the strings in the narrative. I am not saying those things weren't at play. I am just thinking now, that it wasn't pre-calculated. It was done out of lust, passion, anger, those sorts of primal emotions, not motivated by thoughts.
If those beliefs played a part in his actions (and I believe they did) they were in his heart, not his head. I think (even though Brian's head knew Ethan was full of it) that Brian's head wanted Justin to be happy with what he chose, that in his mind, he thought, I hope Jusitn's better off. Brian just knows how to act controlled, that doesn't mean he is.
I don't know. Help?
