Lately, when my mind isn't consumed by Obama (so that means late late at night or very early in the morning), I've been focusing on the complexity of the relationships on the show. It's fascinating the way themes are revisited, to show maturity and change in the characters and the relationships.
One of my favorite examples of this is the dynamic between Michael and Justin.
In 112, we have Justin searching out Michael to explain what the hell is going on in Brian's head.
He explains why Brian shoved Michael out of his life.
And he doesn't stop until Michael gets it.
Now let's fast-forward a few years to 409. This time it's Michael's turn to remind Justin of what's going on in Brian's dysfunctional head.
He's pretty persistent, maybe not as persistent as season one Justin, but still, he makes Justin stop and listen.
You can see when it all adds up in Justin's brain and the wheels start turning.
In 112, Justin's push sends Michael looking for Brian.
While, the 409 talk gives Justin the ammunition he needs to confront Brian.
These are only a couple of examples of how the complex Justin - Michael friendship leads to them supporting and caring about each other in season five.
Michael is helping Justin recover from the recent breakup while Justin is concerned about the rift between Michael and Brian.
The real tragedy is that this time, they can't be there to help each other find their way back to Brian. But that's a different story...
