The Queer as Folk Acronym Dictionary
When I first wandered into the world of QAF (Queer as Folk) fanfic I was reading things with labels like "AU" and "PWP" and "WIP" and "H/C" without a clue what those acronyms stood for. When I found my way into the world of LJ (LiveJournal) and IJ (InsaneJournal) I started coming across even more acronyms that I couldn't comprehend... "IC" and "OC" and "SUN" and "ROFLMFAO"... I was lost! I flashed back to that elementary school lesson about how to study the context in which a word is used to figure out its meaning and before too long (and with a little help from Wikipedia) I had pretty much been able to figure out what the hell everyone was talking about. However, I still occasionally come across acronyms I've never seen before and am left wondering what they mean.

That's my longwinded lead up to this...


WTFITCGTA? (What the fuck is that crazy girl talking about?)

I thought it would be helpful to have a big list of all the acronyms being used in the QAF fandom! Everyone could add it to their memories for future reference and when a newbie wanders into our midst we can point them to this entry so they don't have to deal with all the pain and agony and confusion I did. I figured I could compile a list of all the acronyms that I know of and if I get anything wrong (which I probably will) and if there are alternate meanings (which I know there are) and if I leave anything out (which I most definitely will) you can leave a comment and I'll fix it or add it in. Sound like a plan? You with me team? Ok then!

hey and our fandom (like most) have shorcuts for specific scenes IN eps.

there's 311... which is full of pretty things including
Futon!sex

and there's the Cha Cha Scene
and
Reunion!sex
and
502 Reunion Sex
and
512 Fuckathon
and
straight to number one
and um... i'm sure there are non sex scenes we have shorthand for, i just can't think of any right now.

well, KOB (King of Babylon)

Check out the rest of the comments vamp! I put SUN in because I saw you using it all the time (and I think I saw someone else use it so I figured it was at least sort of common). I had a hell of a time figuring out what it meant, but eventually somehow I got it and was like ohhhhhhhhh hahaha. It was definitely part of my inspiration for this dictionary actually.

Yeah, when i use it with people i sort of KNOW won't know I say SUN (Shutting Up Now)

but in my replies to others i just... use it.

IMHO it's a handy one to have in your arsenal when you look at a post and think OMG WTF? i've been going on forever, i suck and not in a PLAW.

Perfect except. 513 is not JUST the 13th ep of the fifth season, it's the Final episode of the show, so a Post 513 fic means that everything beyond that point is supposition.

SUN.

Erm, i'm insanely happy to see that there because two years ago i decided i was going to make it an acronym...and now it is. Go Team Me!

Also, IME (in my experience) IYNM is just called Tumor!fic
and "growing Up Kinney" = Blind!Justin
and there's the one i always forget the acronym for

(the one where justin's dating someone else and brian interferes) but i think i got the words wrong.

AFAIK - As far as I know

Also, AFAIK ;D 'ded' is just short for 'dead'. When something really affects you - like, say, a particularly good fic - you say you're 'ded' of the awesomeness. Something was so good/bad/hilarious that it killed you :)

I have seen bigboobedcanuck (over at LJ) abbreviated as BBC. I should be able to think of others but they are not occurring to me at the moment...nice idea for a post though!

I *still* have to think what KOB is. And it took me forever to figure it out in the first place. ;)

IIRC - "If I recall correctly" is one I had to look up the first time I saw it.

And I've never seen PIMP unless it meant, you know, pimp. Where've I been?

I can never keep straight what AU and AR mean, so instead I think of fics as either "AU, canon-friendly" (something that is canon to a point and then veers off into a "what-if?" E.g., Morpheus' "Trading Spaces" and "AU" (e.g., jans_intentions "Noir").

OMG ROFLMMFAO!!!!!!!!!! Wiki is tre, but urbandictionary.com is TEH SHIT. I just looked up SUN and came away with the following deffies:

SUN British 'newspaper'; masturbation aid for the semi-literate.
"What a load of Sun-readers!"

SUN Another word for clit.
"I opened up her beef curtains to reveal the bright and shiny sun, glimmering in all its majesty."

I just realized that many newbies into any sort of fandom might not know the words "canon" or "fanon" either.

Canon - events that happened on air in the show. Applies to character traits as well, but there are of course some interpretations to those that has be taken into account.

Fanon - Events or any stuff that has become a "fandom myth" concerning the show. This is stuff that, for example, becomes very common in fanfic that after a while almost everybody sort of adopts it like canon when in reality it's not.
