2/2 ”Becker, mate! What are you talking about? Have things … changed?”
Connor’s voice brought him out of his dazed state, and (with some effort), he pushed away from the wall and hurried to follow him and Abby. It was as good of an excuse as any to follow Becker – but even if he hadn’t had that ulterior motive, a year without either Connor or Abby had unleashed a fierce need to protect the both of them. Quite simply, he wasn’t going to let them out of his sight again.
”Are you … you?”
“Of course he’s him.” Danny quipped, walking alongside Connor and Abby with his hands shoved into his pockets. He raised a brow, fixing Connor with a somewhat quizzical glance. “And if he wasn’t him, how do you suppose he’d know?”
He let out a breath that was somewhere between a laugh and a sigh. “Don’t worry, Captain. You’re still you.” The ex-copper paused, trying not to smirk as he quietly added, “From what I’ve seen.”
Danny took a half-breath before asking them the question that he wasn’t too sure he wanted answered. There was still adrenaline running through his system, keeping him even more on edge than he already was. At the same time, Danny was ready to collapse where he stood.
Except for the fact that he currently had nowhere to stay, because when you didn’t pay rent for a year it was a general rule that you lost your flat. He was going to half to find somewhere to stay, a rented room would do for now, he’d use some of the backpay that they’d been given …
Danny forced himself to stop stalling. “You had something to tell us, soldier boy. And whatever it was, I don’t think it’s anything to pleasant. What were you going to tell us, Becker?”
