New York, New York. A city so nice they named it twice.

It's no Cardiff, but it'll do. I hope nothing imploded this time in my absence.

Welcome back, sir.

Torchwood has managed not to destroy itself in your absence.

Glad to be back. Dare I ask if you missed me?

Managed? That implies there were close calls.

Every day. I don't know that I'd go that far. Maybe just a bit.

No. Nothing so bad as last time, really. I've managed to keep out of trouble. It's more...well...Owen and Gwen don't seem to recall having been here for over a year. They're rather confused as to why we aren't in Cardiff. It's hardly an uncommon phenomenon with this particular rift, but I felt it should be noted.

Only a little bit? Does that mean I no longer have the middle drawer for my socks, then?

Who got into the Retcon after I expressly said no one was to be taking it without signing it out first? It's definitely this rift and not a few dates gone wrong and a few people wanting to get rid of the memories?

Fine, more than a little bit. Don't worry, Jack. Your drawers are safe. The flat's too quiet when you're gone.

No Retcon. They were gone and then appeared again with no memory of being here before and from a different point in time.

That's my Ianto. Could always see right through you. And yes, I missed you. Well, I'm back now. And not intending on leaving any time soon either.

Which then begs the question: what makes this rift different than the one in Cardiff?

Of course, Jack. Always yours. I'm glad. That's good. I'm quite content to hand the position of acting Head of Torchwood back to you.

We can't be sure. It could just be a different variety of rift.

What, no power struggle? Thought I wouldn't? I always come back for you. Why is it you lot always hand it over to me so easily. I'd been looking forward to that whole mud-wrestling bit.

Has to be a different variety. Or else... it's exhibiting factors we never considered in Cardiff.

And miss the opportunity to pass them off to you? Never. They drive me mental. I know, you promised...and you didn't leave without saying goodbye this time. You need to be insane to run Torchwood. I'm just not qualified.

Both are distinct possibilities.

But there still could have been a power struggle, you know. Or at least, a feigned one. I don't break my promises. Not where you're concerned. I learned my lesson about leaving without goodbyes. The other time couldn't be helped. And what are you implying there, Ianto?

Two members of the team I can deal with having memory holes. More than that, and I will start messing with the rift.

I believe, sir, that we're well past the point where we need excuses to shove one another against hard surfaces. I know. Doesn't mean I didn't miss you. I know that you'll always leave when your Doctor needs you. But I also know you'll always come back. Nothing, sir. Why would I be implying anything?

Don't worry, sir. Tosh and I seem to be immune thusfar, and Claire as well. Worried I'll forget you?

If we're back to the 'sir' business, I'm going to assume I need an excuse to shove you against anything. Hard or otherwise. I will leave when the Doctor needs me, but it doesn't mean I don't miss you. It will always be the same. You're who I come back for. The whole team, yes, but it's you in the end. Because you're underhandedly calling me insane for leading our rag-tag bunch of misfits.

Seems to be, if what I gathered tonight is correct, that it follows a disappearance of some sort. So as long as you three don't go disappearing on me, you should be fine. Unless, of course, the rift decides to keep evolving. Perhaps.

I've been told, sir, that it doesn't entirely affect you adversely to be addressed with the title. You don't need to reassure me, Jack. I know what we are to one another, and I know how you feel. Most days. Would I ever do that?

That does sound about right. But we won't go disappearing, so you have nothing to worry about. Don't. I couldn't possibly forget you, cariad.

Yes, well... Can't let you easily get away with it, now can I? Yet I was the one who left. again I love you. That's what we are. Be a cheeky bastard? Why yes, yes I think you would do that.

That's the thing about disappearing. Most times it's not planned. I prepare for eventualities.

You could. I'll be very good, sir. You had to. You owed her for bringing Owen back. And you came back. Like always. Cara 'ch hefyd. It is. I'm offended that you would cast aspersions toward my character.

Well, I'll do my best to stay here. There isn't anywhere else I'd rather be.

Glad to see you're just as cheeky as ever. Yes, like always. Some things are worth coming back for. Offended? Yet, I seem to recall with text proof you being exactly that.

Strange. I said nearly the same thing when you asked me all those months ago.

You haven't been gone long enough that I would change that much. I'm glad. I really have missed you. I have no idea what you're referring to, sir.

Great minds think alike.

Well, one never knows. I was gone long enough to return to an Owen and Gwen without memories, wasn't I? As much as I missed you, no doubt. Do I really need to prove it?

That generally is one of the reasons relationships last.

I had a really good reason to stick around. No need. I already know. You could, however, try coming home. I want to see for myself that you're all right.

Glad to hear it. I'm on my way. Do have to make sure my sock drawer is just how I left it and all that. And to make sure you're all right too.
