Molly's shift at the hospital was scheduled to end at 6 PM, but her productivity had been slow from the constant search through cupboards and drawers to find the right size tweezers, or an extra pipit for the blue indicator dye, or etc., and she barely finished up her scheduled tasks to squeeze out the door at 6:22. She knew it wouldn't always be this way, that it would take a while to figure out the lay of the land in a new lab, but work was usually her refuge, the one place where she excelled and everything made sense, and to feel as helpless as a first year graduate frayed her nerves. If a sense of normalcy was to be found in her new location, she was not finding it soon. Outside the hospital, she took a deep breath and starting walking. It was 5 blocks North and then 5 blocks West to the house she was assigned to in Portland, a 13 minute ride by bus or a 20 minute direct route walk. While the temperatures were mild she opted for the fresh air and exercise over the crowded bus. ----------------------------------- (Earlier that day...) Jayne strode down the city sidewalk as if he owned it. Being in unfamiliar territory WAS familiar territory to him and he shed no tears from being separated from Mal and the others on Serenity. He still didn't rightly understand how he came to be in this city but he received a warm enough welcome from the hologram woman, hell the Shǎguā [fool] had even given him money! Just for getting himself lost in some worm den. "Gāisǐ de báichī," [damn idiots] Jayne muttered to himself. He stopped in front of a strip mall window. He had found what he was looking for. Throwing open the door he walked straight for the shop keeper. "I am new in town." Jayne said, turning his head to see the selection. The store clerk nodded. He was used to out of towners. "Do you prefer brewed or distilled?" "Brewed." Jayne nodded. "Grain if you have it. Cheapest you've got 'll do." The shop keeper pointed to a sign, "You want a case of this. It is in the cooler on the far right." ----------------------------------- Molly neared 2901 NW Raleigh Street and noticed that the lights were switched on. She had left in a hurry that morning to get to work, she must have forgotten to switch them off when she left. She would be more careful tomorrow morning, she 'didn't need to help the utility company stay in business,' as her mum would say. Wishing she could pick up the phone and hear her mum's voice, Molly was lost in sad thought when she unlocked the front door and stepped into the house. She dropped her keys and belongings on the table closest to the front door and made her way back to the kitchen. She would drown her sorrows in her delicious leftover Thai food and then soak in a hot bath for hours. She let out a startled shriek when her eyes turned to the living room. Beer cans littered the floor around the sofa. Molly's eyes spread wide in panic and her mouth dropped open. Sitting in the middle of her sofa, with his boots propped on the coffee table in front of him, was a giant of a man with a smartly trimmed goatee and a gun strapped to one hip. Molly stood and stared for several long seconds. He was eating her leftovers from the container with a casserole serving spoon. "Who are you?" she finally blurted in shock. She caught herself at the sharpness of her question and added, "What are you doing in here?" Jayne pulled the spoon out of his mouth slowly, cleaning every last drop of sauce from it. He was in no hurry to reply, the girl was obviously terrified, and unarmed, so he had time to ponder the best way to respond. His eyes narrowed slightly as he thought. Remembering his warm welcome--with $200 in cash handed to him like it was owed to him just for being there--from the hologram woman in the hospital, Jayne figured he might be someone important in this world. A cocky grin spread over his face and he breathed in deep to puff out his chest, "Well, I would be the hero of Canton, right here in the flesh." Molly stared at him, "The WHO?" Jayne's expression fell as if she had just run over his puppy. "You ain't heard of me then?" |
