Elijah opened his eyes and slowly looked around. He no longer felt disoriented, he knew very well where he was and that was at his brother and Hayley’s home. He was in Hayley’s bed and beside him, Hayley slept, snug against him. The little bit of peace he felt at the moment was what he needed, even if it would be fleeting. His body turning slightly, only wincing because his muscles were still terribly sore after enduring such agony, he settled behind Hayley, his arm moving around her and pulling her closer, as if that were possible. She stirred against him and turned, looking him over.
These moments with Hayley were few and far between. The quiet, the closeness, but there were much more important matters to discuss and those should be discussed with Niklaus. Hayley had gotten him more blood and it helped with his healing process. He was still sore, but he had gone through immense amounts of pain. It was to be expected.
He and Hayley had gathered in the living room. Niklaus should have been home any time, at least he would imagine so. It was imperative his brother fix this because it would never end. They found it easy to capture originals, having already captured Rebekah and then himself. He knew that if Niklaus found out, he would announce they would pay dearly and perhaps they would.
But it was something that Elijah would have to stop, even if it appeared his abilities weren’t exactly golden these days.
Hayley didn’t quite know what to say to Elijah. So far it had been largely about taking care of him. She had to nurse him back to health and that started with blood. The rest he had to do on his own. He was an original vampire which meant that he would heal faster than most other beings in the universe. Eljiah already looked a little better but still peaked. She knew it wouldn’t stop him from fulfilling their end of the deal. If it was up to him, he would still be tied up in a basement somewhere.
“You need to eat,” she said sharply. She tossed Elijah a blood bag. He looked terrible and chances were that Klaus might notice and inquire. It was also possible that Klaus was too busy thinking about stupid Klaus things and wouldn’t notice. They couldn’t tell him that Elijah had been abducted, he would be too full of rage and there would be nothing but wrath descending down on the Argents and their wolf pack. That was a bad thing according to Elijah. She believed him because she trusted him. He was even trying to stop her from hurting Chris Argent despite the fact he had kidnapped and fucking tortured Elijah. If they were that important to him, they had to be important to Hayley. God help her. She gave him a pointed look while he quickly tore into the blood bag and disposed of it before his royal highnass strolled into the living room. There was a dark cloud following him. Good. Hayley was plenty pissed off too.
“Clara’s not coming back until we can prove that we can be parents. Rebekah has her. She’ll take care of her. I know that I’m the last person to lecture anyone right now. I have a problem and I don’t know how to fix it. And until I figure it out, I can’t be a good mother to my daughter. It fucking kills me. I need you to be a good father. I need you to go and undo what you did to Allison so we don’t start a war. Clara doesn’t deserve that and neither do we. Don’t you get tired of fighting?”
Nope. That was the problem. Klaus never did get tired of fighting, did he? He thrived on conflict but he couldn’t be that way around Clara in Hayley’s opinion. But at the same time, she knew nobody would defend her more fiercely than her father would.
Klaus had been off doing his own thing for some time now. He knew Hayley had sent Clara off, away from him likely, for what he’d done to the little hunter and what fallout was likely to come from those actions. He hadn’t stuck around to ask for details, it wasn’t like Hayley had been around all that much herself, so he’d ditched the house for a few days, roaming the Portland streets, feeding his way through the Pearl District and beyond and losing himself in his anger. He also drank. In non-descript bars where no one would know him or know who (or what) he was. It was easy to lose himself in his sadness and his anger. Though to be quite honest, his anger was mostly at himself, he was the cause of all this. It was his own fault that he’d lost his own daughter. But he wasn’t ready to admit that.
But he would come home, even for short periods, to change his clothes and he would stand in the doorway of his daughter’s room until tears filled his eyes and that would only serve to anger him further. He was a powerful, indestructible hybrid, an Original vampire for god’s sake, there was no reason for him to be crying. That would make him angrier and he would tear out of the house, bent on drowning himself in killing. It was only a matter of time before the hunters figured it out, but he didn’t care.
Today, he came home to get a change of clothes and take a shower and he’d barely made it in the door when Hayley confronted him. Klaus clenched his jaw tightly, his lips in a firm line as his light eyes narrowed at his daughter’s mother. “You sent our daughter away without informing me.” He said evenly, though his tone was edged with that anger boiling inside him. “And now you want me to fix the little hunter.” This got an amused chuckle out of him. “You amuse me, Hayley. I’ve no intention of fixing anything, I did the girl a favor, saved her from a treacherous life. If anything, they should thank me. Now if you have no plans of bringing my daughter back home, then I’ve nothing left to say to you.” He turned away, then spun back around. “Oh, and should the little hunters pet wolves decide to exact revenge, I won’t hesitate to rip every single one of their hearts, still beating, from their bodies and stare into their fear filled eyes as the life drains out of them and the bloody organ in my hand stops beating.”
“And what if this should happen to Clara?” Elijah spoke up. He knew it would anger Niklaus, but it needed to be said. A father’s love, was no doubt, a father’s love, but Allison had a father too. In what way, shape or form did Niklaus have the ability to do whatever he pleased and when those exact revenge, they were to just be killed as if they didn’t matter? Elijah didn’t find it right in the least and this bothered him.
“What makes it okay for you to take everything away from Allison? Yes, I do realize that she did harm our family, but you’ve carried this entirely too long. If you were to deal with her, you should have killed her the moment it happened. You’re being rather sporadic with your actions, Niklaus. You need to fix this because it will not end. You do realize this, yes?” Elijah did realize what he said. That his brother should have just killed Allison in the beginning and been done with it, but it was the truth.
“You are fixing this!” Hayley hissed at him. She was angry. She slept like shit even though Elijah was next to her. Usually she rested well next to him. But she was still twitchy from being deprived of fairy blood. It was nearly the only thing she desired. Soon it would be hers again. No, wait. She needed to stop. She needed to get control of herself. How could she yell at Klaus for not controlling his impulses when she couldn’t control her own. That was the reason why Hayley didn’t know exactly where her daughter was either.
“We are not going to war and have you expect me to bring Clara back into this house. She is the easiest way to hurt the two of us. She’s the only way to hurt you. Do you honestly think she’s safe here as long as the hunters keep coming after us? You didn’t kill her, Klaus. You did worse than that. You made her a ghost. She’s there but she’s not really there. Why would you do that?” It would make sense if Allison was a loner but she wasn’t. She traveled with that retarded pack which meant people would tell her things and she would just be confused.
“Clara is our family and Allison has a family too and they’re just as protective and frankly? Just as fucking crazy. So you are going to make this right. Either give her her memories back or just kill her already and let’s get this bloodbath over with. But that’s not exactly a bedtime story we can tell our daughter. Do you want her to be like us?” She was just a baby right now but she would look to her family. Right now Rebekah had perfect control and she even had experience raising a child with Santana. She was the only one Hayley would trust.
The sound of his brother’s voice made Klaus pull his gaze from Hayley and over to Elijah, who, of course, had his own opinion to add. This was only making Klaus angrier because while his brother might be dating Hayley, that didn’t mean their daughter was any of his concern. He appreciated that he wanted to help, but when the original hybrid was already pissed off, unwanted opinions weren’t going to help anything. Yet, even as he glared at his brother, but before he could even say anything, Hayley raised her voice and pulled his attention back to her. Klaus clenched his jaw so tightly he could’ve broken his own teeth, he didn’t like being reprimanded like this or ganged up on and that’s exactly what was happening. They were trying to corner him, force him into something he didn’t want to do. Something he wasn’t ready to do. Klaus worked on his own timeline, didn’t they realize that by now?
“You said it yourself, Rebekah has Clara. I trust my sister, she will allow no harm to come to her. They won’t find her, they would be dead before they even tried.” Klaus fired back at them, his hands clenched into fists at his sides as he glared angrily between the two of them. “You felt it safe enough to send her off with Rebekah, no? Why do you doubt this decision now? They would be dead before they ever found her and you both know this. Our sister, Elijah, despite her misgivings, is very smart, she would never allow herself to be found if she didn’t want to be found. I’ve spent centuries with her, I know her. Even better than either of you, if we’re being completely honest here.”
He licked his lips and let them slide into an amused smirk. “I know what you’re doing. But, it isn’t going to work. Nice try though. You’ll not play on my emotions as a father to plead for the little hunter’s memories back. Though, your idea, Hayley…” He held out a finger, shaking it at her and still smirking. “Not a bad one. Maybe you’re right. Perhaps I should just go ahead and put the girl out of her misery. No memories, no more fight left in her. She’s served her purpose, perhaps I should do as you suggest and just go ahead and kill her. My toy is broken and that’s what you do to broken toys, yes? You dispose of them.”
“So this will never end, will it? It’s not just you. This isn’t just about you, brother. This involves all of us.” He knew that all too well considering where he had been the last few days, chained up and tied down in a dirty basement, shot full of vervain and bitten by werewolves. All of those things he’d never tell his brother for fear that he would go and kill the Argents and their wolves. But Elijah was growing very tired of this game. It wasn’t a play on Niklaus’ emotions, Elijah was very well aware of that. It was just the truth. It was what would happen. He was sure of it. Mr. Argent had already made his intentions known and there was no doubt in Elijah’s mind that it wouldn’t just be Mr. Argent and Scott next time. But instead the lot of them.
“How selfish are you?” Elijah said quietly. Niklaus was still his brother. Elijah had enough respect for him, even if he did not agree with his comings and goings or his way of thinking as such right now, but he felt this was getting them nowhere. HIs daughter was supposed to mean everything to him, but he of course, did not even consider the what if’s of the situation and instead focused on the fact that he refused to be swayed. He was refusing to lose. But this wasn’t Niklaus losing, this was Niklaus making the best decision for his family.
“Stop it,” Hayley snapped at Elijah. She knew that she had no room to tell Elijah to shut up but he wasn’t helping by insulting his brother. She knew he was a pain in the ass and she knew that Elijah just went through hell for him. After they got Allison’s memories back, Elijah could be a dick to Klaus all he wanted to. Klaus deserved it after all.
“I’m the one that started this. You were just cleaning up my mess, right?” Hayley stepped in front of Elijah, blocking Klaus’s view of his brother for the moment. She made sure she had Klaus’s full attention. “I promised that little girl that I was going to be a better parent than my parents were. I promised her and I meant to keep that promise but now I’m an addict and I don’t know how to fix that. I just know that it’s not okay to be around Clara right now.” She sighed.
“Finish cleaning up my mess,” Hayley said. “Kill her, kill them all or give her her memories back. I don’t care but you have to end this. Just remember that if you do decide to kill them all? Our daughter is going to hear things about us in this town while she’s growing up. How are you going to explain all of this killing to her? I know your parents were dicks too. They didn’t give you up, they were even worse than all that. Be better than them. The only way to get Clara back home is for both of us to get our shit together. Please end this tonight, one way or another. I’ll trust your judgment on whichever you decide.”
Hayley was right to step in front of Elijah, blocking Klaus’ view from his brother and making him focus solely on her. Elijah was only fueling that anger even more and Klaus was growing closer and closer to the edge of no return. There would be no hope for helping Allison or any of them if he slipped over that edge. But, Hayley took matters into her own hands and started speaking to him on a level that made him listen. Klaus still had his jaw clenched but the anger was dissolving and the words were starting to get through to him. Hayley was right, they couldn’t let Clara inherit more enemies here. It was bad enough back home, but here, it was almost as if they had a fresh start. A second chance.
Klaus was still Klaus, but he loved that little girl more than he ever though he was capable of loving anything or anyone. More importantly, he never wanted to be the father Mikael had been to him. The way he’d treated him, beat him, shamed and verbally abused him. He’d spent so long running from his father, hating him in ways that had shaped him to become the evil monster he’d become that he never wanted that for Clara. His mother had been no better, calling them abominations, trying to destroy them. Tears welled up in his eyes at the thought of it all, of sweet, innocent Clara viewing him in that way.
“Very well.” He said, veins in his jaw visible from how tightly he had it clenched. “I’ll return her memories.” Klaus advised with a nod, before holding up a finger. “On one condition. They don’t seek retribution in any form. I will leave the little hunter alone as long as they stay away from my family. Is this a condition they will agree to?”
Elijah stared at his brother, amazed and slightly cross, but he forced himself to bite his tongue in this moment. Hayley had gotten through to him and he was taking it. Elijah held no weight over him, not anymore, but that was no bother. The only thing that mattered was that he had agreed and that was all he could ask for right now, but his conditions were no doubt laughable considering that was what the truce was for until he and Hayley mucked that up.
“Very well. I believe they will agree to that.” Again. At least most would. Mr. Argent, he wasn’t entirely sure of, but his main concern was his daughter, just as Niklaus’ main concern was for Clara. Elijah wanted this done here and now. He wanted this over with. He wanted this finished. Casting a look at both his brother and then Hayley, he nodded. “I will go get her.” He said nothing else and instead left the house. It was most dangerous to be walking toward Allison’s house, especially after all that had happened, but it was needed.
Allison wasn’t at all happy to hear about what had happened across the street the night before. She and Lydia had been talking and then eventually the noise of the fight grew so loud that it drew both of their attention. Allison could feel instinct kick in, to tell her to go and help but she couldn’t truly remember how to fight and didn’t want to get in the way. Although later, when she found out how close Isaac came to dying, she wished she had gone and helped.
She was back at her own house, her father’s house and back in her bedroom. She didn’t know what else to do so she sat perched on the window seat flipping through her old notebooks hoping to find a spark of the person she once was. There were bits and pieces that clung to her like dust but they were the memories of someone else. Allison felt vaguely connected to the people around her but not to herself.
Glancing up she spotted a figure set against the darkness. It only took a moment for ehr to recognize that dark outline. It was Elijah standing in the far corner of her yard. His face was expressionless, he simply stared at her. There was something compelling about him that went beyond the idea of compulsion and Allison nudged her window open. Without too much thought, she did a tuck and tumble off of the second floor landing. The landing was a bit sloppy but she didn’t have her memories.
Slowly she approached him, her flats crunching in the cold grass as she approached him. She crossed her arms over her chest wishing she hadn’t worn such a thin tshirt. “What are you doing here?” she asked him.
Elijah waited until she met him outside and took his jacket off of him and handed it to her to wear. “We’re getting your memories back,” he said and nodded for her to follow. Their walk was mostly silent, he didn’t want to reveal the reasons that Niklaus had decided to change his mind, nor did he think it was any of her business. While he did trust Allison, it wasn’t fully, mainly because she didn’t remember anything. Plus, he didn’t think he’d be dealing with her for awhile, which was a shame, but it had to be done. At least for now. He didn’t want to give Mr. Argent or any one else from her circle any reasons. He was just done with the fighting and his patience was worn. He had much more to focus on and he intended to do it.
“I don’t want you to worry. I will be there the entire time,” he said, stopping before he opened the door to Niklaus’ home.
Klaus waited, as patiently as he could, while Elijah went to retrieve Allison to bring her over. He sat, drinking his liquor and wishing this would hurry and be over. While the others were fed up and wanted it over, he was no exception, because deep down, he too wanted it over. Not that he would ever verbally admit it, but if it guaranteed his daughter would be safe, then he would do this and he would give the little hunter her memories back. Though, he wasn’t entirely stupid, his returning of her memories would come with the stipulation that they never come for Clara, that the truce Elijah enacted would return and they would all go about their business and leave one another alone. This was how it had to be. It was for Clara that Klaus was doing this, no one else. Perhaps it was Hayley’s words and please that had gotten through to him, that had convinced him to do this, but the ultimate reason behind it was his daughter. He couldn’t risk her being harmed, or her ever viewing him the way he viewed his own father.
As the front door opened and Elijah and Allison stepped inside, he stood from his seat and drank down the rest of the bitter liquid he’d spent the last few minutes swilling in his glass each time he refilled it. “Well, well, little hunter. Looking well for someone who doesn’t even remember her own name.” He smirked. Did they really expect he would be kind about this? He was a dick and that was something that was never going away. Elijah, however, shot him a look and Klaus merely chuckled. “Very well, brother. No need to clench any tighter, let’s get this moving, shall we?”
He stepped forward towards Allison, both hands resting on her shoulders. He didn’t miss her tense at his touch and his light eyes met her dark ones. “Relax, love, I’m not going to hurt you.” He said, calmly and evenly. “I’m going to help fix you, okay?” He locked his eyes on hers, making sure she was completely focused on him as he spoke. “You will remember everything I took from you. Who you are, what you are, all of it. You will no longer be stripped of the memories I’ve taken from you.” He paused, letting that sink in before he added one more thing. “You will also convince your father and your pet wolves to restore the truce that was once in place and none of you will ever, ever harm or come after anyone in my family again. You will leave us be and we will give you the same respect. Understood?”
Hayley was filled with relief the minute that Klaus finally did what they had been asking him to do all along. Not only did he restore Allison’s memories, he compelled her to be protective of his own family. It was brilliant. Now that they had one of The Argents fully on their side, Hayley liked their chances of surviving this city after all. There would still be problems. There were always witches and hunters and werewolves around to fuck everything up but at least this was hopefully one last thing to worry about.
Allison was scared, she couldn’t help that. She wanted her memories back so badly but she had heard all about Klaus. She was surprised when he looked so normal, attractive even. She expected some kind of ogre. It was difficult to relax in his presence until he pulled her under his influence.
“I understand,” she said, her voice flat and compliant.
The feeling was familiar especially when everything came rushing back to her. She remembered everything, including the time they had spent together. She was sickened and yet felt strangely protective of him at the same time. The conflicting feelings confused her and she took a few quick steps away from him. The only reason she didn’t fall was because she was incredibly coordinated. She realized she was in Klaus’s house from when she and Katniss had attacked the place. She remembered everything and she knew that she was the lamb in the lion’s den. So she did the only smart thing and left.
Elijah’s eyes remained on Allison the entire time despite his need to throw daggers in his brothers direction. He was concerned for Allison and once it was over, Elijah could sense that she remembered. He saw the emotions that she felt across her features and then she turned and left. Closing his eyes, if only for a second, he finally opened them and looked at Niklaus.
But instead of saying a word, he left as well, following Allison until he was by her side. He wasn’t sure what she would think of him after remembering everything that she had gone through. The truth was, he didn’t know the extent of it, perhaps he should, but he didn’t ask and it wasn’t as though his brother would tell him the truth. She was upset, that he could tell and he reached out, touching her arm softly and pulled her back until they were at a stop in the middle of a sidewalk.
“I know you want to go home to your family, but I wanted to express to you my deepest apologies. I feel as though I’ve failed you and if I’ve lost your trust, then I understand.” It was only right to apologize. He did feel tremendous guilt over this and perhaps he would never forget. Actually, he was certain he wouldn’t. While he thought it best that he should limit his interaction with her from this point on, he wanted her to know how he felt.
“Why?” she asked sharply. “We kidnapped you. We tortured you. The only thing you’re guilty of is being related to him and having bad taste in women.” Her words snapped out because her desire to hurt him was strong. It wasn’t really that Elijah deserved it, he didn’t. It was just the frustration had welled up in her and now that her memories had returned, her aggravation with the last couple of weeks tripled. She wanted to hurt someone else to work a little of her own hurt out but that wasn't right. So instead she went with the bitchy tone.
Not only was hurting Elijah not right, Allison was now hard wired to protect him and his jerk of a brother and his crazy cracked out girlfriend. She knew that if or when Chris or Isaac or Scott went after one of the Mikaelsons, Allison was going to have to put herself between them and that sucked. She had a side, she chose a side, she was born to be on a certain side and they had played with her mind until she was protecting the bad guys. The whole thing with Klaus messing with her head, that weird experience in the hotel room, the scary night in the mill. All of it was being processed in that moment because she hadn’t been able to before. That and all of the things that had happened while she couldn’t remember. Like Scott staking Elijah. That was a picture that would stay with her for a long time.
“I have to protect you, you and your entire family now. Are you going to protect mine?” her eyes stared hard into him. She couldn’t compel him to do anything the way they could to her. But she could be convincing when she wanted to be. Klaus had just tasked her with keeping both insane families safe. Would Elijah step up and take on the same amount of responsibility? They both knew that Klaus sure as hell wouldn’t.
It didn’t matter if they had taken him. He should have been able to keep the peace and he had obviously failed. He was serious when he spoke about a truce before and that did not matter and he felt this did not matter. Niklaus had her compelled to protect him. That’s all this was and once again, it was for Niklaus’ pleasure. Elijah felt that Niklaus would always have a hold over Allison and that bothered him greatly. Once again, it would need to be Niklaus to take away her compulsion, but this time he doubted that Niklaus would and there would be nothing but conflict, still. It wasn’t as if everyone from her inner circle would listen and be compliant to actually protect them, or rather, Niklaus.
“I will,” he promised, although it seemed his promises fell flat, but he would do everything in his power to protect her family from his brother. He was done with the fighting, all of it. Perhaps Niklaus would enjoy a simple life if only for his daughter and Hayley. Whenever Elijah said a word, Elijah either found himself ignored or Niklaus expressed that his opinion was not needed. And that was perhaps true.
“You should get home. We will talk,” he smiled a little sadly, feeling at a loss, but grateful her memories were returned.
“Yes, we will,” Allison said seriously. She couldn’t stay angry at Elijah, she had no right to be angry at him at all. He hadn’t done anything wrong except for try and keep peace between two families that were bloodthirsty for war. Allison knew her family was no better. It was easy to take The Argents’ side because they were hunting the monsters. But sometimes when you spent too long hunting monsters, you became one too. Allison could feel herself darken and twist, transform. It had been steadily happening since her mother’s death. Yet Elijah had lasted for over a thousand years and somehow managed to stay good. Allison probably wouldn’t have managed that.
“I’m not in this alone. They say you broke the truce but you didn’t. I didn’t either. So you and I are still in a truce, no matter what the rest of our families do. We’re in this together,” she said. Some part of her wondered how she could somehow draw herself up to her full height and try to make herself imposing against an original vampire who had lived for hundreds of years longer than she had. She had turned eighteen with Klaus this year, but she was still a child in front of Elijah. It didn’t matter. They had to maintain their own truce. It was the only way to keep their families in check, or at least to try because that was truly an impossible task.
Kate was back and that was going to make Allison’s job a lot harder. She wouldn’t care about a truce. She would go against Klaus thinking that her werepanther self could beat an original hybrid and probably get her throat slit again. They all had an impulsive sociopath in the family.
No, neither of them broke the truce, but it was Hayley that in fact did. While she did want to make things right, it was Niklaus that took it and twisted whatever Hayley had done. It had gone on days without either of them knowing and Elijah still did not have the details and Allison was not sharing. He didn’t want to know. He didn’t want to know what his brother had done because it might have been the turning point. He would turn his back on all of them.
Elijah felt inadequate, unable to handle this family and he was right in that aspect. There was no trust between siblings, this he knew and thus nothing would ever be accomplished. While the Argents all came together for Allison, there was only blame and anger toward the Mikaelsons, as always. It was a never ending circle, but a circle that Elijah would in fact pull himself from because he was tired of it.
But he couldn’t turn his back on his siblings, no matter how much he would want to. Family was family. There was a bond there even when it looked as though it wasn’t.
“You’re not in this alone. I will always help you, Allison.” Only because it was clear that this would never end.
“I'll hold you to that.” She smiled at him softly and turned to go. There wasn’t really anything else to discuss. She wasn’t even in a hurry to get home and tell her family that she had her memories back because then there would be the onslaught of questions and the way she had left things with her father before she was kidnapped wasn’t exactly good. Maybe she would wait until morning to tell them, she had a lot to think about tonight. Starting with how she was going to sneak back in without her father knowing. She felt vulnerable out in Portland at night with no weapons so she made sure to stay on her guard. If Elijah followed her home or not, she would never know.
