Kingdom Hearts, Wakka/Tidus, dreaming of another world
Tidus had been spending a lot of time staring at the horizon lately, and while he hadn’t said anything about it, it still got Wakka worried. Reminded him too much of Riku, and while they’d all managed to get home safe and sound, no one had seen Riku since, though Kairi said she had faith he’d come home someday. Wakka admired Kairi’s confidence, but didn’t feel that he could handle waiting Tidus to return if he ever took his head to take off half as well as she could.
He stepped behind Tidus and leaned on him, resting his weight on Tidus’s shoulder. “Hey,” he said casually. “What’s up, Tidus?”
Tidus jerked, raising one arm to grab Wakka’s arm, and turned to face him. “Oh, you know. Just the usual,” he said, dropping his hands and acting casual.
“Uh huh,” Wakka said, and looked him in the eye. “You’ve been staring out there an awful lot lately, ya? Got something on your mind?”
Tidus glanced away, at the horizon, and Wakka’s heart clenched in the moment before he looked back. “It’s stupid.”
“Gotchu staring, though,” Wakka pointed out.
“I guess.” Tidus looked at the ground, then rubbed at the back of his head. “It’s just- I keep dreaming about other places. Kind of like when everything was wrong, you know? Only it feels-” He pulled a face. “It doesn’t actually feel wrong. It feels like being here with you guys- like it’s just as real as all this.”
“Something more real than us, man?” Wakka asked, catching Tidus in a headlock and ruffling his hair.
Tidus flailed. “Hey, I didn’t say that!” He twisted, mostly to try to get out of the hold and partly to look up at Wakka. “‘Sides. You guys’d catch it if I started doing anything stupid, yeah?”
“‘Course,” Wakka said, getting in one last ruffle before letting go. “You can always count on us.”
