She's so rarely alone that she doesn't know what to do with herself when she is. Ladd is such a constant presence in her life, so real and so solid in a world that always seems to be a little out of control, out of her reach. She loves that about him, so dependable to always be Ladd. Other people think he's unpredictable, she can see it in the way they slide away from him, the way they can't meet his eyes. But he's always Ladd. And someday, he'll take her away from all of this.

Until then, he gives her pretty dresses and stands too close in public and is too loud right in her ear. She's not sure anymore how to fill the silence when he's not around. She walks from one end of their little room on the train to the other. She takes a new pair of gloves Ladd bought her out, smoothes the wrinkles on them and puts them away again. She fixes her hair exactly six times in the mirror and walks back and forth across the room exactly eight. On the ninth time, as she turns around, there's a man in her room, covered in blood.

It's obvious that he's a little shocked when she doesn't scream, expects her to scream, but while she can't deny that he startled her, her heart beating frantically in her ribcage, she can't say that she's afraid of him. Not really. Ladd will be the one to kill her, and she believes that with all her heart, so what could this man do to harm her.

"I think you have the wrong room," she says, softly, and the sound of her voice, without Ladd's to prompt it, sounds tiny and alone in the room.

"I think I have the right one," he rejoins, his own voice softer than she'd expect, a soft caress of sound where Ladd is bright and clamorous. The smile, as though he's just discovered a Christmas present under the tree, coupled with that tone makes her wonder if he's going to rape her. She feels oddly at peace. It's better than the solitude. He takes a step towards her and she stands her ground and maybe that's brave, but it's more that she's just not afraid of him. "Do you know who I am?" It takes her only a moment to think about it. She knows that people think she's a little slow, maybe off in her own little world, but she does listen, and she's not dumb. She nods,

"You're the Rail Chaser," it's not a question. The grin widens in confirmation and he steps right up to her, not quite close enough to get blood on her dress, and lays his hands on her neck, delicately, as though he were making her a necklace of them. She feels something strange twist inside her, something she can't, doesn't want to, identify. His hands tighten, just slightly, just enough that breathing is a little uncomfortable, not yet obstructed and she stares at him, his face so close to her own.

"You're... not afraid of me," it's not a question, but she shakes her head ever so slightly anyway, feeling the skin pull under his fingers. He leans in close, his lips close to her ear, "Why shouldn't I kill you right now?" he asks, in a tone she can feel like slow honey dripping down her spine to pool in her toes. She doesn't know why, just reacting to the way that makes her feel, but she leans her head back, even though it chokes her a little, and licks a clean spot on his cheek. Someone else's blood is cold iron in her mouth, but she's been covered in other people's blood before.
"Ladd is the only one who can kill me," she says, sweetly, but with absolute confidence. And maybe it's something in her tone, but he pulls back slightly, enough to look at her with a growing sort of wonder, as though something about that makes her a kindred spirit or something, before he kisses her, hard.

The kiss is warm, and coppery, and she wonders who life it is that she can taste on her tongue. It's more harsh than any kind of passionate, quick and a little dirty, as though he knows his time is running out and he wants to taste as much of her as he can before it does. It's so very different from Ladd, who's so oddly careful with her or so boisterous that he hurts her with his enthusiasm. And then he pulls back and just stares at her a moment, before he smiles.

"We'll see about that," he says, softly, and he makes it sound romantic.

When he's gone, mere moments later, she just stands there, staring at the window before she slowly moves to her travel chest. She pulls a handkerchief from the bottom and wipes off her neck and her mouth with some water from the basin. She washes her mouth out with some more water, cupped in her hand, and swallows, tasting blood and maybe a little of the Rail Chaser as the coolness of the water soothes her too hot insides. She fixes her makeup, hides the soiled linens in the bottom of her chest and sits on the bed, fingers twisting part of the bedsheet into little knots.

She feels guilty, as though she's cheated on Ladd. She doesn't feel bad about licking the blood off him, because maybe that was just her way of surviving. She doesn't feel bad about the kiss because he kissed her. And she doesn't even feel bad about the way it all made her feel, fluttery and warm and a little weak in the knees, because sometimes girls feel that way, about other men, right? Other girls... that was normal enough, wasn't it? But she'd betrayed Ladd all the same, and didn't even know how to apologize, to make up it up to him. It had only been a moment but... for that moment...

For that moment, she'd wished *he'd* killed her instead.
