Let me start by stating that transformation spells aren't easy. With the amount of energy they require, most of the time you're better off just going for brute force, really.

Thus, a wizard who gets annoyed with you is far more likely to throw a fireball at you than turn you into a boring old frog. Of course, in the first scenario, the chances of your survival are significantly lower.

Presumably, that meant whomever had thrown the spell at me wanted me to remain breathing. "This is bad." My voice sounded - well, it was my voice, and yet at the same time, it wasn't.

"Could have been worse." Thomas seemed mostly unharmed - a few scratches and he'd probably never be wearing that shirt again, but otherwise, he seemed fine. "At least you're not a frog. You can still talk."

So I could. Call me unsociable if you want, but somehow, knowing that whomever had thrown the spell at me would probably be dropping by later for a chat did little to make me feel better.

"Well, this was fun. Let's go home now and never do this again."

One of these days, I'm going to wisen up and stop going to appointments in abandoned warehouses that are obviously traps.

We didn't talk much during the ride home. Thomas seemed lost in thought - somewhat unusual, but not in itself a reason for concern.

It was a little disconcerting to realize my changed body seemed to have a bit of an ... odd reaction to being in such close proximity to him. I'd always known Thomas was pretty, naturally, and that he had the kind of looks that appealed to women.

There was a certain logic to it, I supposed, that his looks would now appeal to me, too, now that I was, strictly speaking, a woman - except that, on the inside, I was still me. I was still Harry Dresden, and Harry Dresden was a man.

"Hey." Thomas touched my shoulder as we trudged up the stairs to my apartment. My heart felt like it skipped a beat. "We'll find a way to fix this, Harry."

"I know."

He smiled. I wondered what it would be like to be kissed by those lips.

For three days, we pretended nothing had changed. I don't know how easy that was for Thomas - I mean, he was White Court. He had to notice something. If he hadn't yet, it would only be a matter of time.

That's what I told myself: that it would only be a matter of time before I wouldn't need to tell him anymore, because he'd know - and that would be much worse than if I told him myself.

"We need to talk," I said.

"I was going to take out the trash." It was his turn, according to the roster. I'd done it half an hour ago, knowing he would forget. "Honestly."

"Not about that. About ... " How to put this? "About us, and well, this." I gestured at my chest. He looked. I felt my cheeks heat.

"I don't know nearly enough about spells to be of any use to you." Thomas made a helpless gesture. "It's completely outside of my experience." I noticed he wasn't looking at my face when he spoke.

"Hell's bells, Thomas - last night, I dreamt about you."

"Some sort of omen?" He turned his eyes away at last. I felt oddly disappointed. "A vision for the future?"

"Not unless you were planning to have passionate sex with me."

Thomas bit his lip. "Well, you seemed convinced that you were straight, and that I was, too, so I didn't really - I mean, you are my brother. Half-brother. I didn't want to risk that, just for sex."

In other words: he wanted me. Had wanted me before.

"It's just this body," I said. Not a nice thing to say, on second thought, even if it was true. I'd never considered having sex with Thomas when my body'd been male.

Thomas was looking at me, his expression a mix between excitement and wariness. He'd meant it when he'd said he didn't want to put our friendship in jeopardy. He licked his lips, quickly, as if they'd gone dry. "I'm not sure what you want me to do here, Harry."

"Why don't you try doing what you want to do?" I unbuttoned the top-button of my shirt. It didn't show much that I could see, but Thomas' gaze seemed drawn to the now exposed skin.

"Harry ... "

"I've always wondered what all the fuss was about, anyway." I tried to sound casual, like it was no big deal. "And I like you, Thomas." What was more: I trusted him.

"Are you sure?" I expected him to lose some of his humanity, to see his control slipping. Instead, though, he seemed to be strengthening it, focusing his attention on me.

"Yes."

He nodded once, then leaned over to kiss me. I'd expected it to feel a little strange, a little unusual. I'd never been kissed by another man before, after all. Instead, it felt perfectly natural - and naturally perfect. Thomas was a good kisser.

"Bedroom?" he murmured, after what felt like hours and not nearly long enough. It took me a few seconds to get his meaning, then I rose up, discovered my knees hadn't quite turned to jelly, and led the way.

"You should thank whomever put that spell on you, Harry." Bob sounded like he was smirking. "Thanks to him, you finally got laid."

It felt good to be back to normal again. Although seeing Thomas still gave me some mixed feelings.

"So who was it?" Bob asked eagerly. "Don't tell me you just picked up some random guy somewhere and let him have you."

"That's really none of your business," I told him.

"Aw, Harry, don't be like that. Bet you couldn't seduce someone anyway - even with that nice rack you got, on the inside, you were still you. Hopeless at seduction. Did someone throw you a pity-fuck?"

"No. In fact, I think he might not even care I'm a different gender now."

"True love, huh?" Bob sounded serious. "Better be careful."

"Aren't I always?"

"Not really, no. But, seriously, Harry, I'm happy for you."

It surprised me to discover that meant something to me. Perhaps the spell hadn't entirely worn off after all.

"Thanks, Bob."

"I still want a name, though."
