Re: Darker Than Black, Amber/Hei, before I get any younger, 2/2
And why should she? After, as Amber must have known he would, he lets her go, protests and questions never passing his lips. He's no threat to her, not now.
Alone, dressing in the near dark of a room that now seems almost to echo with emptiness now that she is gone, Hei is surprised by loneliness. He feels bereft, almost betrayed by the absence that comes so soon after her sudden appearance. And why shouldn't he? The feeling is familiar even if the cause is not. No matter how sad she looked, no matter what he once felt for her, Hei can't forget the truth: Amber has betrayed everyone she's ever met.
Dressed, the incriminating dust brushed from his clothes as best he can, he walks away, back curved in a slouch and his gait Li's usual shuffle, just as though nothing had ever happened. The mask is back in place; Hei doesn't intend to let it drop again and he refuses to look back.
From somewhere above him, floating lightly on the breeze, he thinks he hears Amber's laughter.
