Summary: Remus has left Hogwarts and goes to Sirius's side.
Remus stood beside the large four-poster bed and looked down at the dark-haired man sleeping there. He still couldn’t believe all of what had happened in the past year. Not only his unlikely position as a teacher, but his relationship with Severus, and now the return of Sirius. It really was a lot for him to take in.
He sat on the edge of the bed and reached down, gently smoothing back a stray lock of black hair from the sleeping man’s forehead. Severus was so understanding - he hadn’t expected that at all.
Remus brushed his knuckles down the man’s cheek, causing his eyes to open, and smile to cross his face.
“Morning, gorgeous,” Sirius said in a low, raspy voice. “Are you sure you should be down here already? School’s just finished, hasn’t it?”
Remus smiled. “We all agreed it might be best if I was not there when the student’s parents arrived to pick them up.” Sirius moved over and Remus stretched out next to him with his back against the headboard and ankles crossed. Sirius shifted so that his head was in Remus’s lap, and Remus continued petting back his hair.
“I missed you.” Sirius moved one arm over Remus’s legs. “And then when Snape started telling me about...”
“About us?”
Sirius nodded. “I didn’t know what to think. Did you know he offered to leave you so that you could be with me again?” Remus stopped petting for a moment. “You didn’t. No, he wouldn’t tell you that, would he? Anyway, when I told him that he’d better not toss you over that shamefully, he suggested the three of us stay together for a while and work things out.”
“You always did talk through everything that was on your mind, didn’t you?” Remus leaned down and kissed Sirius’s forehead.
“It’s terrible inside my mind now, Remus. I can’t keep two thoughts together anymore. The only wan anything makes any sense is if I can put things into words. And even then, half the time I don’t know if I’m actually saying anything or if this is part of a dream.” Sirius closed his eyes again.
“It isn’t part of a dream, and you’re doing fine. Go on.” Remus spoke softly, soothingly.
“I don’t know what he was suggesting. And I don’t know what I was thinking in applauding the idea.” He took a deep breath and sighed it out. “You do love him, I could feel that. And I know you still love me, or you wouldn’t be here sitting so comfortably.”
“I do. Love you, that is. And I do love him. This isn’t something I thought I would have to deal with, Padfoot.”
“I know. I just hope you’re glad to have me back. I would hate to think that I was intruding on your new life.” Sirius moved so that he was curled around Remus.
Remus slid down on the bed and brought Sirius’s head to rest on his shoulder. “You’re part of this new life, too, Padfoot.”
“I’m not the same person I used to be. I’m old, and scarred, and my mind doesn’t work like--”
Remus leaned down and kissed him. Sirius’s lips were dry and cracked, and his face was still a little leathery and weather-worn.
But he tasted like Padfoot. That sweet mouth was as much a home to him as anything he’d ever known, and it was a comfort that Remus had thought he’d never know again. Severus was right, again. Somehow his lover had known that he would never be able to give up Sirius once he had him back.
That was probably why Severus had suggested he come and spend the day with Sirius.
