Blue waves crashed down upon a white shore, a sandy picture frame for the world of lush green that lay within. From high above, from far beyond, it was a spotless frame; each grain of sand came together to make a seamless whole. As one wave, bright blue with a crest of white, broke upon the seamless sand it left something behind in the blue of the high tide, a figure. His torso was naked, tan against the bright colors of the water. Somewhere around his stomach he slipped down beneath the tide. The water was cool against his skin, a mercy not otherwise afforded by the merciless sun that beat overhead. Long hair laid dark and drenched against him, traveling down both sides of his neck and across his shoulders in a kind of wild, wet mane. His eyes scanned the shore, searching for something. Nereus had never seen anything like this place. He had never seen water unlike the stormy grey seas off the eastern shore of North America. He felt the sand in his talons, each hand burrowed so as to prop his torso up out of the water. So long he had swam, long enough that all memory of it seemed to slip beyond his grasp. Finally, he had arrived. Weariness threatened to take him then and there; Nereus contemplated slipping out into the shallows to sleep. Should he explore instead, waiting for the final rays of dusk to fade to shed his scales and walk upon the shore? Sleeping would delay the opportunity, for only the light of the moon could afford it. Dusk continued to retreat across the darkening shore. What light remind glittered across the sea and illuminated the brineborn's eyes; they were two solid pools of yellow, like a cat. While they searched, the mermaid stayed, stilled by indecision. |
