Entry tags:james potter, sirius black

Who: James Potter and Sirius Black Potter
What: James tries to persuade Sirius it's time for a walk. When Lily's away her boys have a tendency to get in trouble.
When: While Lily's away with Snivellus.
Where: A short distance from Potter-complex (which needs a names)
Status: In progress
Rating: TBD

The clock on the wall had to be one of the most annoying sounds James Potter had ever heard. For every minute that Lily was gone he had to hear the infuriating thing tick sixty seconds away, and he couldn't help but wonder what was going on at Snivellus's that was important enough for his wife to waste sixty seconds of second shot at life with him. The process repeated itself over and over, a minute passing, James glaring at the clock and imagining all manner of dull or infuriating things that Snape could be saying, and it was slowly driving him mad. He twirled his wand slowly over his fingertips, imagining Lily's possible reactions which ranged from indifferent to angry to, worse, receptive.

Bloody hell, I don't want her being friends with him again. I don't want to have to play nice with him, or to ignore him when he looks at me with that sullen look. He's a git, and he deserves to be hexed.

"Right then." he said, getting quickly to his feet and putting his wand into his back pocket. "how about a walk then, Padfoot?" He knew that Sirius didn't want to go out, and they had both been avoiding the subject. However, now was as good as a time as any, and James wanted the distraction. Besides, he thought, the sooner Sirius saw that innocent things like walks and ventures outdoors wouldn't hurt him, the better. It was just another step on his recovery to being 'good old Sirius' again.

Sirius glanced back from the chair he was in, sitting in front of one of the computers. While he'd been on the run from the Ministry, it had served him to stay around Muggles for a while, since they weren't seeking him so actively, and in that time, he'd picked up at least some basic understanding of how the contraptions worked. He was enjoying the ability to communicate with others without having to see them, or rely on owls.

But at James' question, Sirius shook his head almost immediately. "How about not?" he countered. Then, grasping for a reason, he added, "Can't you see the clouds? It's going to rain. A lot."

His determination to get out of the apartment growing more and more by the second, James laughed softly at Sirius's excuse. "Rain? Come on, Padfoot, we'll go to a park and I'll be Prongs again, it will be fun. The rain will give us an excuse to beg Lily for warm cocoa and sweets."

His look softened, because he wasn't a fool, he knew what was likely the reason behind Sirius's reluctance. "It will be fun." he said gently. "Two marauders out and about again, Padfoot and Prongs running in the woods again. Please?" He gave Sirius his most persuasive look. "It will be fun."

Sirius looked at the door, then back at James. He was glad his legs were under the desk, because they were shaking with nerves. It was tempting. So very tempting. Padfoot and Prongs, running about together. The ache for that kind of a day, a new memory to add to all the others, forced his head to nod.

"Okay. But just to the park. We're not going anywhere else, right? No leading me off to meet twenty bloody strangers?"

James all but beamed at Sirius. "Why Sirius, I'm hurt." He said, his voice taking on a teasing tone as he all but bounced on the balls of his feet in excitement. "I was going to suggest we go out to meet twenty beautiful women who were all madly in love with you, but I guess now I'll have to make other plans. Yes, we're going straight to the park and straight back...unless I see an ice cream shop on the way back. I could do with ice cream."

He put his hand on the doorknob. "Come on, Padfoot, or I'll take you to visit the groomer and have them put cute fluffy bows in your hair instead." He was just eager to get outdoors, and it showed. He was getting a little case of cabin fever, and it was doing too much for his imagination.

Sirius rolled his eyes, but slid out of the chair, bending over as he did. He touched ground as Padfoot, and crept towards the door. His tail was tucked between his legs, as he still really didn't want to go out there, but deciding that he was going to stay right beside James at all times helped him.

He looked up at James and gave a tilt of his head to show that he was ready. They'd had enough interaction like this, that even in their Animagus forms it was as though they could communicate normally. Every flick of his tail, look in the eye, or twitch of his nose was another way to talk to James.

James kept his eyes on Sirius, quite amused that his friend had managed to squeeze in enough time to roll his eyes before he transformed. "Come to think of it, Padfoot, the groomers wouldn't be a bad idea. We could get your nails painted a pretty shade of pink and..." James rattled on as they started taking the first few steps away from the apartment, trying to distract Sirius from the fact they were heading out even though he knew that wasn't really possible. Someone passing by might think that he was barmy for talking to a dog like it was a person, but people did odd things all the time so he wasn't too concerned with drawing unnecessary attention.

While they walked, Padfoot kept turning his chin up to look at James. The expression was clear, especially with the slightly curled lip. If there was any more talk of groomers, James was going to get bitten. His tail was still low, but not completely hidden under him. And looking up at James was a difficult task when one's canine head didn't want to turn in that particular direction.

All in all, it kept him a bit distracted.

James laughed heartily at Sirius's expression, especially the curled lip. "Don't get any ideas, you mangy mutt. If you bite me I'll make sure that Prongs tosses you into the pond when we get to the park." James wasn't even sure if there would be a pond at the park, but as far as he was concerned any decent park had to have one.

Finally they made it, and, after looking around for a moment, and, finding it suitably deserted, James lowered his voice to a whisper. "What do you say, Padfoot. Ready to see Prongs again?"

The lack of people, the open air, the grass under his feet. Padfoot's tail began to wag. The scent of the air was different from London - from anywhere else he'd been, actually - but it ws still outdoors, and there was grass and Padfoot was rolling in it, scratching the spot between his shoulders against a lump of sod that was relieving that itch perfectly.

When James whispered to him, Sirius paused, and pawed at the air with all four legs. His tail was wagging like crazy, and he rolled over, onto his feet again, laying crouched on the ground, ready to pounce.

There was something so right about seeing Padfoot's tail begin to wag again, watching as he did normal things like scratching his back with the uneven ground. When the big black dog rolled over and looked ready to pounce, James got even more excited than before, as he missed the days when the Marauders would race and wrestle and spend those awful full moon nights together at Hogwarts in their Animagus forms. "Alright then, you mutt, here goes nothing."

James started to race away from Padfoot in his human form, changing mid-stride into Prongs. They would race first and see where that got them. There wasn't really any plan, just a break to run off some energy and enjoy seeing one another in their Animagus forms again...though James was going to look Padfoot over closely later to see if Sirius's dog form was looking much better with a few days of Lily's careful fussing.

Padfoot was off like a shot the moment James started to run. He could hear the footsteps become hoofbeats behind him, but didn't let himself turn to look, just slowed down a bit until the stag was beside him, then ran for all he was worth.

He was still pitifully thin, but his energy level had improved tremendously. Muscle was starting to form again. And there was no stiffness, no pain while he was moving.

James glanced over at Padfoot as they raced, though it made his movements a bit more awkward. Though he still looked bone thin, he was moving far easier. He was running and if you ignored the way that he looked so damned neglected, you could forget for a moment what Sirius had been through. That was James's goal, to make Sirius forget, to help Lily fatten him up and heal him and get him as close to the old Padfoot as was possible.

Prongs darted out of the straight line of a race to circle around the running dog. He was trying to head him off, to meet him face to face so that he could paw at the ground with his hooves and pretend as though he was going to paw at the dog. He wouldn't, of course, Sirius was far too ill as it was and delicate, but it was an old, well loved, familiar game.

Padfoot saw the way the stag cut to the side, and understood. Sirius wasn't sure if he was ready for the game, but Padfoot would not be denied. He circled about as well, coming around to meet the stag head on, jumping up onto his back paws as he kicked the front ones in the air.

Oh, he was going to be tired after this. He knew it. But right now it was too nice to be able to play.

Were it possible for a stag to grin, James would have been all but beaming to see Padfoot so excited. It made his own movements that much more exuberant, and he pawed at the ground as though he were some sort of charging bull.

Oh Padfoot, it's good to see you getting better, he thought happily.
