"... Cornelius?"
The soft-spoken voice was filled with a combination of concern and confusion. One moment, Zira had been packing her things to leave with her husband, in the hopes of traveling back in time and somehow saving their doomed planet. The next, she was standing in front of a large building unlike anything she'd ever seen before. And apparently, she realized as she turned in a full circle, her husband was nowhere to be found.
"If this isn't just typical," she sighed in mild annoyance. Not at Cornelius - no, she found it difficult to be annoyed with him for very long or very much - but rather the situation as a whole. Finding oneself in a strange, unknown place when you had been in the comfort of your own home a blink of an eye earlier was certainly grounds for annoyance, she thought.
Although she would also admit, if only to herself, that she was rather curious as well.
It was likely due to this mixture of annoyance and curiosity that kept her from noticing the smell at first. When her nostrils flared a bit, though, the stink became overwhelming and all too easy to identify.
Humans, she thought. Wherever I've turned up, it's obvious there are far more humans than apes. Which, again, didn't give her too much pause either. She was used to humans. She was a veterinarian who specialized in the creatures, after all. It may be a bit concerting to be in the midst of so many of them, true, but she was fairly certain she could use her quick thinking to get out of this mess unscathed.
Then came a car. It was unlike anything she had ever seen before, and was making a horrible racket as it traveled down the smoothly paved road. Nearly leaping a foot into the air as it made some sort of honking sound at her, Zira had to admit once it had passed that she was starting to become a little wary about her new surroundings. Especially when, not a moment later, the loud, raucous laughter and conversation amongst a group of what appeared to be teenaged humans reached her ears.
Her blue eyes (so unusual for an ape but she was used to be unusual amongst even her own kind) cut across the expanse of the street to the other side. The teenagers spotted her a second later and one of them had the sheer audacity to point at her. And laugh.
"Look!" he exclaimed. "It's a monkey wearing clothes!"
This incited more laughter from his friends, but Zira didn't bother listening to any of them. She was too busy backing away, her eyes wide and her mouth hanging open in shock. This... this was not home. This was no where close to home. What was going on? Where was she?
Having backed herself completely up against the smooth, cool brick surface of the building, she flinched slightly and turned, holding her suitcase tightly as she scurried into a nearby alley and away from the humans. Her heart was pounding in her chest and her mind was racing. She needed to get somewhere safe, somewhere that she could find some answers. Reaching the end of the alley, she came out the other side onto another street that looked nearly identical to the one she'd just come from. Another honk of a horn, another group of humans who gave her curious looks (but at least didn't point and laugh), and Zira slowly backed into the alley once more and slid down the wall into a crouched position.
"Oh, Cornelius," she whispered softly, glancing between each opening of the alley warily, "I've really done it, this time..."
