RP: Little Boy Worried
Character/Pairing: Pansy, Peter
Rating: G/PG
Warnings: don’t think there’ll be any
Summary: Peter has something on his mind.
A/N: Set in Fascination, around the time Amy and co. get home for the holidays.

Peter was troubled. At five years old, it was usually simple, silly things that worried the little boy, like what he was going to get for Christmas or if Taddy—yes, he knew how to say it right and always did in public these days, but he was still Taddy—would be upset that he spilled something on the rug in his room, but it was something more serious that preyed on his mind.

He’d overheard—he hadn’t meant to, honest, he’d just been looking for his book!—his Aunt Natalie and Aunt Mandy talking about Taddy and Pansy, and normally that would be okay because everyone seemed to like Taddy and Pansy—except sometimes Uncle Nathan, but Taddy said Uncle Nathan wasn’t always like other people when it came to things like that—but today it was different. Aunt Natalie was wondering if Taddy was ever going to propose to and marry Pansy.

Peter was familiar with these concepts because that was how Aunt Mandy became his aunt, because Uncle Nathan proposed to her and they gotted married last year. He’d gotten to be in the wedding and everything, and it had been cool. Taddy had explained it all to him. Being a smart boy, he understood that if Taddy and Pansy married, Pansy would be his mummy. He’d never had a mummy, but if he could ever pick a mum it would be her. She was all soft and sweet and she liked playing with him and he loved her.

But if Taddy never married her, she would never be his mum. And this wasn’t a thought he liked at all. Like Aunt Natalie said, maybe one day Pansy might get tired of waiting for Taddy and leave. Peter didn’t want her to leave!

He was doing what he did a lot, sometimes. He liked walking around the manor and thinking, and Taddy let him do it as long as he was very careful. Mimsy was usually around anyways. So Peter walked down the hallways, randomly entering rooms and looking around and trying to figure out how to keep Pansy from going away.

Things were going amazingly for Pansy. She wasn't known for her patience (but then, who really ever saw beyond the mask she'd worn for years?), but she found herself with patience enough to take this relationship at Theo's pace. She understood the importance of not rushing into things, for Peter's sake. However, she was ready.

Somehow, along the way, she had fallen hopelessly in love with Theo and Peter. Theo had given her so much, opening her eyes to new things. He was a complex man, sometimes grumpy and brooding, but there was a beautiful gentleness about him that Pansy couldn't help but be drawn to. And Peter... who couldn't love that little boy?

Pansy was in the study, wrapping a few gifts (already packaged and carefully labeled so that she didn't mislabel them after wrapping them). She could have done it by magic, but she enjoyed the process. She heard the pitter-patter of light feet walking down the hall and glanced around the door to see Peter roaming the halls. She smiled warmly.

"Hey there, Peter," she called out with that smile that was all his. "Where are you off to now?"

Peter couldn't help but smile broadly when Pansy looked around the corner and greeted him. Pansy always had a smile for him and it always made him happy, even if the little pucker of worry on his forehead didn't completely smooth out.

"Pansy!" He'd long ago learned her name, of course, though in his neediest cuddly moments he still called her pretty like he had for a long time after he'd first met her. He even remembered to call her Miss Pansy in public some of the time.

"Jus' wandring round," he told her with all the solemness of young youth. "What are you doing?" It made him quite curious to see her looking out at him from the study, and it was almost Christmas, after all.

Pansy noticed the little crease of worry across Peter's forehead, and brushed her hand over his hair. She wondered what was on his exceptionally bright mind, but knew that whatever it was, Peter would probably bring it up at some point anyway (though she certainly wasn't above gentle questioning to get to it sooner).

"I...," she drew the sound out as she motioned for him to come into the room, "am wrapping a few more presents. Would you like to help?"

As they sat around the packages again, Pansy smiled a bit conspiratorially at Peter. "Not to worry, these ones aren't yours. Yours are already hidden away," she teased him lightly.

His face visibly brightened at the mention of presents. Like any kid, Christmas was an exciting time and he really couldn't wait for his presents, though he was trying very hard to be a good boy so he'd get them all.

"Yes," he said, not quite bouncing up onto his toes, obviously thrilled to ahve been asked to help. He hurried into the room with her, feeling like he was part of a fun little secret.

"Awww, Pansy," he complained mildly when she told him his presents were hidden. "Taddy hid mine too." Okay, so he'd looked for them, but he hadn't found anything yet. He probably wouldn't, either, but looking could be a lot of fun. He looked speculatively at the presents though. "Whose we wrapping?"

His excitement was certainly contagious. Though this wasn't the first Christmas she'd spent with Peter, she had a feeling it was going to be one of the more memorable ones. She and Theo had been dating for three years, they'd long ago discussed marriage, and a part of her hoped desperately that he would stop being so patient.

"That's because you're just too good at guessing," she admitted with a conspiratorial grin. "This one is for your Uncle Nathan and Aunt Mandy," she told him, holding up a package. She pointed toward the rolls of wrapping paper. "Why don't you go ahead and pick out the paper?"

So far these holidays had been very nice, or so Peter thought. Of course, he was old enough to enjoy a lot of the other priveleges these days, and Amy had just gotten home and she promised to spend time with him, which was always fun. Her friends, too, seemed to like him well enough and he remembered them from last year.

"I like guessing," he told her. Uncle Ferrol had taught him how to guess some last year, sneaking him downstairs to the tree and shaking presents with him. He hadn't ever told Taddy about that, either.

"What is it?" he asked, ever inquisitive even as he hopped up obediently and trotted over to the rolls of wrapping paper. He studied them for a moment, looking a lot like Theo contemplating things, before picking out a pretty silver and green one that reminded him of his Uncle Nathan for some reason. "How bout this one?" he asked, bringing it to her for her approval.

"Want to know a little secret?" she asked the little boy with a grin. At his nod, she said, "I like guessing, too. Your Daddy has hid my presents, too." And he hadn't budged on it. He refused to even give her a little hint at what he might have gotten her. She enjoyed the game, though, and knew that she would have a lot of fun on Christmas morning when it was finally time to open her gifts.

"I'll tell you, but you have to promise you won't tell anyone! It will be our little secret, okay?" She didn't think there was any particular danger of Peter telling Nathan and Mandy what she'd gotten them, as they tended to keep mostly to themselves. They'd been incredibly difficult to shop for, considering that Theo was hardly close to Nathan, and Mandy and Pansy were friendly, but hadn't exactly become friends.

She smiled brightly at his choice, taking the roll from him and laying it out on the ground. "It's perfect. Why did you choose this one?" she asked, wondering if there were any particular reason, or if Peter was simply as Slytherin as the rest of his family.

Peter nodded and listened avidly as she told him she liked guessing too. He laughed that quiet, childish joyful laugh at it. "He's evil," Peter said with a nod, repeating the teasing he'd heard Amy give at some point.

Peter gave his solemn promise. He was good at keeping secrets, he thought. Even if he really, really wanted to tell sometimes. "I proimse I won't tell," he told her earnestly.

"It 'minds me of Uncle Nathan," he said, holding one end of the paper down to keep it from chasing the roll. "He's very Slythering," his mouth couldn't quite wrap around the word completely though it was a good attempt, "Taddy says, and Uncle Nathan likes green lots."

He looked up at Pansy. "You like green lots too," he said with a proud smile at the observation. He liked watching Pansy sometimes. He didn't want to even think about her maybe leaving.

Pansy laughed appreciatively at Peter's decisive note that Theo was evil, and she wondered just who he'd picked that one up from. "He's not evil, he just enjoys seeing us so excited to find out," she disagreed lightly, the humor still present in her tone.

"It's a leather-bound photo album," she told Peter as she lifted the lid off the box to show him. It was wrapped in plastic, and she lifted the album out of the box to show him the back. "See here, I had them put their names on it." She pointed across the bottom of the back where 'Nathan & Mandy Nott' was engraved in an elegant silver script.

"Oh yes," Pansy agreed with a small, very small chuckle, "Your Uncle Nathan is very Slytherin. So is your Daddy." Pansy left so endeared to this little boy, even more than she already was, that he noticed such things about the people around him. He truly was an extraordinary boy. "You're right, I do like green. Did you know, I was a Slytherin, too?"

"But I want'a know," he said a bit plaintively. He was a rather well spoken boy, very intelligent, though there were times he had trouble pronouncing some words--or at times he could be a little lazy with it. Usually it was the former, but not always.

"It's very big," Peter said as he looked at it, reaching out to touch it through the plastic. "They'll like it," he said decisively, nodding. "It's pretty." But not pretty like Pansy.

Peter nodded, helping by holding things in place as they carefully wrapped the present up. He asked a question he had been wondering for quite awhile. "Am I Slythering like you too?"

It was almost a fragile question, especially since he related it to her and not his dad. His face was back to being a little worried, though he hadn't broached teh subject on his mind, not really.

Pansy chuckled, running a hand gently over Peter's head again. "You will, sweetie. Christmas is only a few days away now," she reminded him. "And maybe we'll both be lucky and your Daddy will put the gifts out a little early this year." She'd have to remember to mention it to Theo, in the interest of indulging Peter, of course. Not because she wanted a go at her own gifts. No, definitely not that.

"Oh good," Pansy said in relief. "I hope they do. You know, you should stay little forever, because buying gifts for adults is really hard work," she confided as she put the book back in the box, closing it and setting it on the paper. She measured the paper out, and then trimmed off the bit she would need. Setting the scissors on her other side, away from Peter, she maneuvered the paper around the box, giving Peter gentle instructions on how to help.

Her hands stalled for one single second at his question before they continued the wrapping. She licked her lips to stall, trying to think of how in the world she should answer that question. "You can be whatever you'd like to be," she told him with a small smile. "Even if it's a Slytherin like me."

She noticed again, though, that little crease of worry, and she wondered what it was that was worrying him so. "What are you thinking about, sweetie?" she asked softly, patting the spot next to her. When he sat next to her, she moved her arm around his small shoulders, cuddling him against her side.

Peter tried to be patient, but he was only five, and Christmas was such a big thing to a child. "I knoow," he said, puffing out a sigh, lip unconsciously pouting slightly. "I hope so," he said, perking up just a little.

"But I want'a grow up," he said. "Can't do anything, even stay up all night for Santa." Though the concept of Santa differed a bit from the Muggles--a very special sort of fairy or some such--he was still a bit of a fixture there.

He followed her instructions well--he was overall a good kid, though he had his tantrums and his hard times as well.

"I want'a be," he said. "Just like you and Taddy." He might not understand the concept of Slytherin, but he did understand that those two were the two people he loved bestest in the whole world.

Peter went over to her with no qualms, arms wrapping around her in an almost needy hug. He'd always been particularly affectionate with her, that womanly touch of hers filling some void in him, and though he loved cuddly with his father too, Pansy was the one he liked especial for comfort.

"You aren't going to leave, are you?" he blurted out in a tiny, earnest voice, looking up at her worriedly. Of course he didn't even think to explain why he would think such a thing.

"Oh noooo," Pansy said, her eyes widening at his insistence that he wanted to grow up. "Don't you know? Even grown ups can't stay up all night for Santa! Santa won't come to our house unless everyone of us is sleeping."

Her own father had always made it a point to make Christmas special and full of surprises for her. Her mother hadn't wanted to let Pansy continue to believe in Santa, but her father had let her keep that little bit of innocence until she was ready to stop believing. Gods but she missed her father.

Pansy's fingers moved lightly through Peter's soft hair. It was getting a bit long, the ends curling slightly, and she absently thought she should talk to Theo about getting it cut again. She looked down at him, her lips parted, her brow furrowed. "Why would you think I was leaving, sweetie? Of course I'm not leaving," she assured him.

Peter frowned and sighed. "Darn," he pronounced, and considering the language of some of his family members, it was often surprising something stronger didn't escape a clever little person such as himself.

He sighed quietly as she stroked his hair, obviously needing the attention as he was practically glued to her side, holding her so firmly.

"When you get tired of waiting for Taddy to marry you, you'll leave." He was terribly solemn and worried looking, obviously anxious about this. "Aunt Nat'ly was talking to Aunt Mandy and if'n he keeps waiting so long they say you might go away and I don't want you to go away. You could marry me instead I don't want you to go."

The words tumbled from his lips, perhaps a little nonsensically though it made perfect sense to him.

Pansy lips quirked in mild amusement at his use of the mild curse word. She probably shouldn't be amused, but, really, all kids learned to curse at some time or another, and as long as it wasn't encouraged, what could they really do? She would be sure to mention it to Theo, though.

She felt her heart break just a little bit at his worries. When he continued to explain that he'd heart Natalie and Mandy talking about it, it made a little more sense to her. At his offer, her heart turned to goo. "Oh Peter," she said softly, pressing her lips against the crown of his head.

"I'm not going anywhere," she promised. And then, an idea struck her. "Maybe you could tell Taddy about it, though." Perhaps Theo would stop stalling if Peter made it clear he wanted Theo to propose. "I'm sure he would like it if you told him why you were worried."

"Really?" he asked anxiously, looking up at her with those dark eyes of his for confirmation and reassurance. She was the most motherly person that was there steadily in his life, and he adored and trusted her.

Peter looked down, his head resting on her shoulder as he gave boyish thought to her suggestion. "I could," he said quietly after a long moment. "He won't be upset at me for listening when I shouldn't?"

Some of his worry seemed to have gone with her reassurance, though he still stayed in her embrace. It was a moment before he spoke again, though. "If you marry Taddy," his continued use of his pet name for his dad showed his state of mind still, somewhat, "that'll make you my mummy, right?" he asked, peeking up at her through his lashes.

"Really," Pansy repeated, her voice full of calm assurances.

Her fingers continued moving slowly, gently through his hair. "Were you meaning to listen?" she asked gently, looking down at him with a reassuring expression that showed she wasn't upset with him. She wanted him to know that he could answer honestly with her.

These moments with Peter were so special to Pansy, though she didn't have them nearly as often as she would like. She'd always tried to be a positive maternal figure in Peters life, but had worried about becoming too attached to one another, in case things with Theo hadn't worked out.

"If I marry your Daddy," Pansy started at his question, "then I can be your mummy." It was a touchy subject, especially with a five-year-old who couldn't fully grasp the politics of adulthood. She'd been a part of Peter's life for three years now, though, and she already felt like she was his mother.

"Welllll," Peter said, drawling out the word as if he thought he was going to get in trouble. "I wanted to look for my book, but they were there talking and I kinda hearded them." And didn't walk away because it had caught his interest.

He was young and often vagueness was enough for him, but at times he did catch on to the ambiguousness.

"You want to be my mummy, don't you?" he asked quietly, lower lip trembling just slightly. He really wanted her to be his mummy, if Taddy would marry her. he needed to tell Taddy he really needed to marry her.

Pansy could hardly blame Peter for eavesdropping. Besides, if they were having a conversation they didn't want anyone to hear... Well, there were charms to prevent eavesdropping. "Well, you see, you weren't meaning to hear.

Her heart broke just a tiny bit at his question. "Of course I do, sweetheart," she whispered before pressing a gentle kiss against the crown of his head.

It truly didn't matter, had never mattered, that he wasn't her son. Almost from the first time she'd met Peter, she'd fallen for the little guy. She did want to be his mother. He needed a mother. What truly mattered, though, was if Theo wanted her to be Peter's mother.

Peter pouted. "I knowwww, but i couldn't help it," he said with a heaving little sigh. He knew he shouldn't have, but it had been interesting and he hadn't meant to.

He cuddled into her, head burrowing into her soft side at her assurance. He wanted a mum like everyone else--sometimes at the little school he went to some days, the kids said mean things about him not having one, but really he just wanted someone nice and warm and loving like her.

"I love you, Pansy," he murmured into her robes, something he'd said before but perhaps like his father, found it hard to say often.

"I love you, too, Peter," she said, smiling down at him. He was truly an amazing little boy—not without his fits and tantrums, but he had such a big heart, and he was so generous in sharing it.

"Now," she said, tapping his arm lightly once. "How about we finish wrapping up these gifts?"

She picked up another gift. "This one is for your Aunt Amy. Which wrapping paper do you think would be best for her?" she asked.

They wrapped the gifts together, and Pansy loved the feeling of simple joy at sharing this with Peter. She hoped that Theo wanted her to be a part of his family as much as she wanted to be. She would be completely heartbroken if he didn't.

Peter was easily enough distracted back into helping her with gifts, though he stayed closer to her than he perhaps would on a normal day.

He hadn't forgotten his worries, of course, but Pansy had soothed most of them and he rather thought he might talk to Taddy sometime soon about making sure Pansy became his mum.
