The ancient gods of Greek mythology are alive and well and living out their immortality amongst the very mortal. Actually, that’s not entirely accurate. Some are less alive and well, and some are no longer the least bit immortal. Some have vanished, with all evidence pointing to the fact that one of them, their leader and the great father has been dealt a death blow, an impossibility made possible by forces the gods do not understand.
The members of The Society would seem to be the obvious culprits, and truth be told, they have taken full credit. After all, for centuries their one objective has been to keep the gods in check, and to take out one of the top three? Well, it hasn’t hurt the recruitment process. Whether they did it or not doesn’t matter; it has put the fear of…well, gods into the rest of the immortals that any one of them could be next.
Through methods unknown to even the majority of its members, The Society has managed to anchor Zeus’ brothers – Poseidon and Hades – into their respective planes of existence, and Zeus, along with his wife, Hera are presumed dead, a concept that never held much meaning to the gods, not until they were forced to learn it through circumstances. Their father has vanished, their uncles are held in stasis, their once tight-knit community is shattered. Over the years, some of the gods have attempted to free their families. Others have disappeared, and still others have chosen to remain on earth, watching The Society just as they have been watched for centuries.
The gods who escaped The Society have been free to live out their immortalities as they choose – provided they stay well away from the humans with whom they share space. Some of them have done exactly that, waiting for the day when Zeus and his brothers return to power and destroy The Society. Others have not, instead becoming immersed in a mortal life, living with – and in many cases, toying with – the human population. They have adjusted to this world and its pleasures, and show no desire to return to their old traditions. They have made lives for themselves: built businesses, created homes, and even given birth to children with mortals, living out “normal” if extended lives. They will not give up their freedoms easily – unless they can be guaranteed an end to The Society.
The game begins when proof of Zeus’ death shocks the gods to their core. His throne, always and forever solid, has cracked and fallen apart after centuries. The touchstone for all his children, the symbol they held as proof of his imprisonment by The Society has been destroyed, taken as evidence that their enemy has become even more dangerous.
Some will celebrate Zeus’ death. Others will mourn. And still others will rage. All will have an opinion, and all will want to know who is responsible for the god’s destruction. Is it really The Society, as their smug silence has led everyone to believe? Or is it the gods who do not wish to have their lives interrupted? Is it the children of gods and mortals – the demigods – who have used their talents to pay back a father and grandfather who never recognized them past their existence?
No one knows…and those who claim to may not be trustworthy. Which side will YOU fall on?
