War as we knew it was obsolete, nothing could beat complete denial
Who: Coby and Kieran
Where: The Motel
When: July 19
What: A first meeting of the two coolest guys in town
Hating to sleep in late and waste a day, Coby usually rose before 8 am and took off before his psychotic landlady or anyone else around could see him. Not that there was much to do when one was stuck in this town, but he had been finding ways to amuse himself: swimming in the lake, reading, breaking into the abandoned stores and looking around, taking a historic tour of the neighborhood at the town clerk's enthused suggestion. He figured he'd been here for maybe a month or close to it, and if this was going to be the rest of his life...maybe he should up his nicotine intake to three packs a day.
Today, however, Coby slept into the afternoon. As of late he'd been lying awake unable to push the terrible thoughts of his brother's fortune out of his mind. It was hot in the room, the mattress was stiff, and only after every ounce of energy had been wrung from his exhausted body had he finally fallen asleep.
He stood outside, smoking and looking across the landscape. There was a kind of cinematic prettiness to the sparse town. And he had not managed to escape its most interesting characters.
Down the row of doors, he saw the very last one open, and a teenage boy step out. Interaction was imminent, so Coby stood up straight and turned to face him.
