Her glance strayed to his gifts but she still could not look the young man in the face. Wanda forced a small smile, head still bowed. "Thank you, you didn't have to," she murmured. Part of her knew she ought to try to be okay, but another part asked what she owed him. She'd been playing a part all of this time but when it came right down to it, it was only pretend. These kids weren't even kids, they were adults, eighteen and from another universe with other parents and other lives and who was she to step in and play mommy? It would be difficult to make them understand, especially when she was the reason Billy had dragged his friends here in the first place.
