Brows pinched together with concentration, Jessica considered the green and yellow bracelet coming together on the loom she made with a square piece of board and a crayon, before making the decision to unravel it and start again with a new pattern and an addition of white thread. While the others had split off with their friends and art projects, Jessica found a large tree to lean against and weaved her 'friendship bracelet' in solitary peace.
"I made this for you."
A lanky sand-haired boy, not quite grown into his knees and elbows, stood at her feet, holding a braided necklace with heart shaped beads. His hand was trembling, and beads of sweat rolled down his temple, but he was utterly enamored by her. She was sure she'd seen him just earlier making the same eyes at another girl, who he probably knew and genuinely liked, not because her pheromones told him to. Better, to a girl who probably liked him back.
"I want you to be my girlfriend," he blurted before Jessica could speak. She closed mouth, frowned, and tried again. Right.
"No." Her space had been invaded, it was no good now, time to go. Jessica picked up her things and stood up.
"But I--I love you. W-wait!" Sputtering, he began to follow her. "Please! Please?" He reached for her impulsively, and she tore away from him, glaring.
"No," she said, her voice low and dangerous. "Follow me and I blast your face off." Webs of green energy flickered between her fingers. Against the rules, of course, but the threat was for his own good. He stood, dumbfounded and heartbroken, but the feeling would be short-lived. "Leave me alone." Jessica turned on her heel, ignoring the stares of the other campers as she stalked past the meeting site and went up the trail back to the camp.
