There is usually one thing that keeps us off track. Characters: The Contessa, Wanda, later Pietro Setting: Early evening Friday 2/12, Places around NY, then the twins' apartment Content: Nothing questionable Summary: Wanda gets sort of kidnapped then tells Pietro about it
Ever since Brooklyn, Wanda had been haunting the apartment. That seemed to be the safest thing to do, and the easiest way to avoid getting into more trouble. There'd been video, poorly shot from behind, when she was holding off the monster from the cafe door. The footage crept its way online but had barely made it into the news (Hvala Bogu); the casualties and damage were more important stories than anybody who'd been too late to stop it from happening in the first place. Still, Wanda was on edge even though she assured herself no one could recognize her. The problem was that HYDRA knew what she could do. For days she'd spent her time waiting, anxious. Holed up in the apartment, she tried to occupy herself with reading, keeping the place clean, making sure Pietro had lunches to take to work and dinner when he got home, and pretending that nothing was wrong. She couldn't even explain to her brother why her paranoia had returned; she hadn't told Pietro about the coffee shop, she didn't want him to worry. What was done was done, it just wasn't something she thought HYDRA would be too happy about if they knew.
As the week wore on and no one showed up menacingly at their door, Wanda let her guard down a little. If something where going to happen, surely it would have already, and she knew she couldn't stay inside forever. For one thing, they needed groceries. The shopping was put off until Friday evening, when she realized there wasn't much she could put together for dinner. There was nothing else for it, she had to go out. Wanda had hardly made it to the sidewalk before she got the feeling she was being watched, and chided herself for the paranoia. Half-way to the store several blocks down she became convinced that a car was following her. The notion was hard to dismiss when the car pulled into a cross-walk in front of her to stop her going any further. A back window slid down and Wanda stood frozen, grim faced, and wondering if it was even worth it to run. Probably not, they knew where she lived, after all.
