And let's be clear-
Characters: Wanda, Pietro, the Contessa later if she wants in on this one
Setting: Mid-morning, Wanda and Pietro's apartment
Content: Nothing questionable
Summary: The twins have to figure out how they're actually going to survive here and also plan REVENGE.
The city had come alive again after the storm, its residents making up for the time they'd lost confined indoors. Cars clogged the plowed streets and people rushed over icy concrete with their faces turned down against the chill, eyes glued to bright screens and occupied with other things. Wanda didn't mind the cold or snow so much, they reminded her of home, of quieter and happier times before everything changed. She was homesick now, for the city of her birth, even at its worst she would rather be there. She hated that she and her brother were trapped in this city now. Wanda stopped abruptly to glance up at the sky, her thoughts thousands of miles and oceans away, as the mass of humanity sharing the sidewalk broke around her to move past. Someone jostled her hard and rudely suggested that she "Fucking move!" as she stumbled, only regaining her balance half way off the pavement. Wanda snarled an insult in her native tongue that was wholly ignored by her transgressor. This city.
Glowering, with a foot in the dirty slush of the gutter, Wanda shifted the grocery sack in her arms and made to return to the sidewalk when a taxi nearly clipped her, it's driver crawling on through the traffic, oblivious. Another driver in an unrelated fit of impatience laid on their horn, only to be rewarded by an agitated cacophony from other gridlocked cars. Her home in Sokovia was a city too, but a much smaller one. It was nowhere nearly so loud as New York. The hardest things for Wanda to get used to here had been the noise and the constant rush. There was always the sounds and always the coming and going and sometimes she wanted it to stop. Wanted everyone to just stop. Heat was roiling in her stomach, rising towards her face, her fingertips, and Wanda had to suck in a ragged breath and shake the thought from her mind as she continued on her way.
Although she'd hoped it would be deserted, the lobby of her apartment building was occupied by its landlord (exactly who she'd wanted to avoid). He looked up as she entered and frowned. Wanda tried to rush past with a tight smile, but halted at the man's bark of, "Hey, Four-oh-three! Rent's due."
"We've paid," she countered warily, hoping the lie would be enough to jog the memories she'd created for him in the past. It was not. "Like hell you have! Look, if you don't want to be out on your ass, you'd better-" Now Wanda raised a hand, reddish energy dancing at her fingertips and burning crimson in her eyes. "The rent is paid," she said again and the man nodded his assent. Even before she could end the bewitchment, he seemed to buck her control and asked dreamily if she was sure. That was not good.
Shoulders sagging, Wanda crossed the gap between them to press her fingertips to the man's temple, holding his gaze with her own as she repeated herself more forcefully. He nodded again, eyes glowing with the same energy that lit up her own. It dispersed when she stepped away, and this time he made no protest, simply turned back to the front desk. Wanda made a quick escape to the elevator, jammed the button, and kept her eyes closed the whole ride up. Maybe the landlord was getting too used to her power and her illusions had grown less effective, but she was afraid to push any harder because she didn't know what it would do to the man. Something else would have to be done, things couldn't carry on this way.
At the front door of the apartment she shared with her brother, she struggled for moment to withdraw the keys from her coat pocket while balancing the groceries. Annoyed by the time she got inside, Wanda dropped the bag little harder than necessary on a kitchen counter. It had been an irritating morning. "Pietro?" She called out, peevishly supposing that her brother was lazy and still asleep so late in the morning. But no, that wasn't fair, Wanda knew she shouldn't take out her mood on him. Sighing, she began putting away the shopping.
