This extreme display of emotion was rare in Jessica, and Wanda understood just how deeply the ordeal had affected her. She couldn't apologize enough, could never make up for the horror and fear she'd caused. Wanda clung to Jessica and cried against her shoulder, making no attempt to hold back her tears. She mumbled her apologies into Jessica's ear, all the things she shouldn't have done and wanted to make up for and promises that this wouldn't happen again. She cried until she couldn't anymore and at some point a nurse slipped in, unobtrusively administered a sedative to her IV, and left them a plastic pitcher of water and cups.
When Wanda finally pulled away, she didn't let go of Jessica's hands, and offered her a watery smile. "I'm going to ask Jasper to bake you a hundred cakes," she promised. It was the very least she could do. "And we'll fine wine, I don't know, somewhere. Someone in this place must have some." Jessica and Wanda had run out of their own stores within the first six months.
