"Jesus," Kate grumbled, but she guessed she couldn't expect to get a hold of anybody during the world's final hours, least of all her father. Shoving her phone back in her pocket, she closed the trunk of her car and headed back up to the apartment. The dust of the empty foyer had long settled, and gloom filled the deserted hallways. Once on her floor, Kate stopped a few doors down from her and Cassie's, leaning an ear against it as she rapped her knuckles gently against the surface.
"Mr. Harris? It's Kate. Um, are you sure you don't wanna come with us?" Besides the girls, he was the only one who hadn't fled yet. She tried knocking again, but all she heard were the melancholic tunes of an old record playing faintly in the background. "Okay, well...Cass and I'll be leaving soon if you change your mind. The purple bug out there? That's us, so." The music only got louder, and she frowned. As far as she knew, he had no one, but maybe those old records were enough. "Bye, Mr. Harris," were Kate's final words to him before she reluctantly parted and went to her apartment.
She looked around somberly. Another life they were parting from, another home that, in a couple hours, would be lost to them. The newscaster's last doleful reminder help put a heat in Kate's eyes; blinking back the tears, she shut off the television and took a breath, asking herself if there was anything she'd forgotten. After one last look in her room, she went to Cassie's and knocked before she came in. "You ready, cupcake?" she murmured cheerlessly.
