Characters: Jasper, Captain Rogers and Jan
Setting: Out of business auto body shop, the Bronx, early morning
Content: Prooobably safe.
Summary: Steve and Jasper have been spending plenty of time together. They're blood brothers now.
There weren't a lot of things to miss about being a vampire. It was cold all of the time. Food tasted like ash. The tricky problem with the sun and most of all, of course, there was the distasteful diet. That was mostly behind him.
Breathless panting, though, was definitely a human failing, and one Jasper wasn't so much excited to experience now that he was back to suffering it for a solid, breathless month. As he stood bowed with his hands on his knees back against the cool brick wall of the shop, he thought he could possibly trade this for the cold, he didn't mind the cold so much. It took a glance up to Captain Rogers to dispel that thought entirely, making Jasper drop his head and give a private smile at the sight of him with a hand to his ribs, breathing as hard as Jasper was as he limped ahead inside. The rising sun sliced through the alleys and glinted off of the dark windows of a passing car, making Jasper squint and turn away, following the Captain into the shop.
Squeaks and clicks echoed off of the bare walls inside, but it was relatively quiet at this hour as the array of penned animals had just begun to stir curiously. The chickens that wandered the shop freely were the most lively, scattering away from the door then drifting back curiously as each man passed through and chattering amongst themselves indignantly. "Sorry, just a second, let me..." Jasper said, hurrying by Captain Rogers to start running fresh water and hauling heavy, bulk bags of bird feed, cat food and rat treats across the room. "Catch your breath, or, uh, help yourself," he invited with a gesture toward the sink. That was the furthest they had run together in an hour, and then they had pushed through until the sun was up over the horizon-- not anything they couldn't handle, they were just getting started. The punishing schedule was supposed to be for Jasper, though, and the Captain deserved a break. That was what this was about, wasn't it?
"Are you sure you don't have room for one?" Jasper wondered once he had a moment to stop and lift a mangy looking cat out of its cage. It was speckled with bald patches and the tail that swept up across Jasper's arms was kinked in several places, but it was clearly well fed and not without its charm. It purred graciously for the attention, settling without complaint despite the interruption of its breakfast and the chickens that wandered bravely close around Jasper's feet.
