You know that I fell in love with a Roller Derby Queen Characters: Cassie, Colleen, Misty Setting: Some sketch ass warehouse Content: ROLLER DERBY Summary: The girls are sharing their secret passion with their youngest Hero for Hire
"Um, where are we going?" Cassie asked her companions, not for the first time. They were being all mysterious and it was pretty late and this dark warehouse her mama bears were taking her to was pretty sketchy. She was beginning to think this was some weird belated initiation ritual into the Heroes for Hire, or maybe like hazing. Maybe they were going to make her fight them off in some dark warehouse (wasn't fighting them off in a dark alley enough?) or take down a bounty target waiting there or, like, something totally humiliating. They wouldn't do that to her. They couldn't. Had Jasper had to go through this crap?
No one seemed willing to answer her questions and so she fell silent again, alert as they approached the dark squat building that, from out front, appeared abandoned. There was a single door near its far eastern corner and the closer they got, the more confused Cassie became. There were shouts, laughter, and really loud thumping music. It sounded a lot like a party in there. Was she going to have an audience to her fight and/or humiliation? This just kept getting worse. She'd trusted them. Colleen fed her delicious things all the time and Misty had been teaching her about weapons and cars. They called themselves her Mama Bears. Maybe it wasn't some test or ritual, maybe it was like a super hero dance party. She'd be down for that, and it would be way more fun than any terrible trial her brain was cooking up.
What they found inside was somewhere between a costume party and a ritual; a crowd was gathered around a wooden oval rink with ramps along its edges and railings to separate spectators from the sport. A sport which apparently featured bad ass girls on skates in bright period costumes and wigs violently passing one another around the rink while an announcer called the match and the crowd cheered and jeered. Cassie kind of knew what this was.
"Roller derby?" she asked skeptically and glanced between Misty and Colleen. She was pretty sure she remembered seeing a trophy or plaque or something in the office, but she hadn't paid it much attention. The girls were famous for this. Wow. Actually no, that seemed about right, Cassie wasn't surprised at all. They were totally kick ass in the rest of their lives, so there was no reason they couldn't also be totally kick ass on wheels.
