Bitches ain't shit and they ain't say nothing-
Characters: Nick, Bobbi, multiple threads open to anyone else who needs him
Setting: Director's office, S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ
Content: Nick Fury
Summary: Fury reflects on the status of S.H.I.E.L.D. post-zombpocalypse and Magneto attack and what this means for his future
S.H.I.E.L.D. was at forty-five percent capacity. There just wasn't enough personnel between the lives the zombie virus actually claimed and the number of agents who'd drowned when the helicarrier went down. Nick, and the rest of the goddamn world, was just lucky Stark had already taken the cure and started distributing it because if they'd lost that (and there was no doubt in Fury's mind that they would have given the current state of the laboratory in the carrier where they'd been storing it- on the bottom of the Lower Bay) it might've meant the end of the world. If they'd lost Morse, too, that would've been the end of it. It was kind of the only solace, that the world was still saved, when you looked at the number of deaths that happened when the carrier went down.
Of course Nick should've seen what was coming, he was a fucking fool not to. He'd pretty much invaded Genosha and stolen Magneto's prisoners and- technically- his cure, retribution was a given. His biggest mistake was not expecting it so soon. With more warning they could've defended themselves, but wasn't that always the way? With enough warning they could defend themselves from just about anything. Hindsight was the hugest bitch. There wasn't time to dwell on it too much now because there were people to get into hospitals, satellites to put back online, bases to connect with, casualty lists to draw up, a city to pull from the precipice of disaster and a society to start rebuilding. An entire world to dig out of its grave. With all this death, life still had to go on and Nick intended to go on with it, even when he didn't know what the future held.
That thing he'd been so afraid of, that thing that had him bothering Stark for LMDs and asking Alex for predictions, he was pretty sure this might have been it. An avalanche of crises that he'd been unable to stop, unable to even expect and he felt like, somehow, his days were numbered. Maybe not his life but this life, the way he lived now, or lived before. Nothing was going to be the same and he was sure all the shit from above would start rolling downhill on him soon enough.
Sure, it probably was his fault in some way, all of it, if only because he hadn't prevented it. When the smoke cleared everyone would be running their mouths, clamoring for his head, it wasn't like it was the first time. You were a big fucking hero every time you stopped something and the worst asshole whenever it was beyond your control. Even if Fury was at fault, he didn't need to blame himself- plenty of other motherfuckers would be standing in line soon to do that.
