Some nights I stay up cashing in my bad luck- Characters: Cassie, Daisy, Sebastian Setting: SHIELD hq Content: Nothing questionable Summary: Cassie returns to New York in the midst of the zompocalypse
"So, this really sucks," was about all Cassie Lang could manage as she stood before the rubble of the Avengers tower, her former home. She wasn't really surprised exactly, but sad, sure because where was she supposed to go, now? S.H.I.E.L.D., she guessed since she had no idea where the Avengers were now or if they were even alive. If anyone was left alive. This was worse than the war back home, a thousand times worse. There they'd lost Captain America, here she'd maybe lost everyone. Tony and Cap and all the Avengers, all their friends, and Kate- jesus, Kate. She should've asked Kate to go with them, but she'd never expected to be gone so long and never thought that when she did come home she'd be coming back to this. Getting back to New York at all had been insanely hard and now she found that she'd apparently done it all for nothing.
Still, this wasn't the first time she'd been homeless here and she'd become an expert at making fresh starts. New houses, new cities, new universes. This fresh start would feel a whole lot better if she just knew what had happened to her friends. With a dogged look she turned her back on the remains of the tower and shuffled towards Daisy and Sebastian waiting for her feet away. "Guess S.H.I.E.L.D.'s our next stop?" she asked, glancing up at that building in the Stark plaza, still fully intact. For one bitter second she thought how it wasn't fair that it was still there when the Avengers' home wasn't, but she swallowed that down with what was maybe going to be a sob rising in her throat. No time for that, not now, not with the moans of zombies off in the distant darkness and the matter of finding somewhere safe to stay.
