Won't you tell me my brother, 'cause there are stars up above
Characters: Wanda, Pietro
Setting: Malibu
Content: Nothing questionable
Summary: Wanda bothers her brother on their birthday.
"Hey," Wanda's voice was a whisper in the darkness beside Pietro's bed. The blue lit face of the clock on the table beside it read half past two. Wanda stood just out of the reach of the cool dim wash of it's light, frowning at her brother's supine form. "Hey," she repeated again, a little louder this time, and moved to the edge of the bed to lean over and run a fingertip lightly from his forehead to the tip of his nose. She continued the action, persistent and irritating. This was how they'd always woken one another when they were children, nearly every day, with annoying variations of poking or prodding each other in the face. Wanda couldn't remember the last time she'd even had an opportunity to wake him or pester him or sit up all night talking. They'd been nearly inseparable when they were young but things had changed.
"Pietro, darling. Pietro, wake up. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up," she said in a singsong voice and stifled a laugh. She wasn't even sure why she'd come in here, except to tell him it was their birthday (another tradition from childhood long since abandoned). When he was a kid, Pietro had been so grumpy every time he got woken up, like it was the worst thing in the world. Wanda wasn't sure what he was like now, almost as if they'd managed to become strangers in their adult life. It was sad but Wanda decided that maybe they could start over somehow, without weird hang ups or their father's toxic influence. Another birthday and a new year- a better year for both of them, hopefully, than years in the recent past. Even having Pietro nearby, she realized, it was possible to miss him- her worrying during his surgery had put their relationship into perspective for her. More than anything else, Wanda wanted her best friend again.
